I just found out I Have to have surgery to have my thyroid taken out. I have multiple nodules (goiters) on it and they want to test it. I understand they have to slice you across the neck to get to it. Has anyone else had this procedure done? and what can I expect? and how long did it take til you were back at work? Thanks

Well, my father had that kind of operation a long time ago. He didn't seem to have any problem. I don't even remember about the operation being a prolonged occurrence. Anyway, I don't have other first-hand information other than it didn't seem to be a big deal. Of course, after that, you need to take artificial thyroid hormone for the rest of your life. Anyway, it's just one tablet per day. No big deal also. I, myself, am taking it because I have hypothyroidism.

I take the medicine already. Have been for over ten years. Just not looking forward to the pain and recovery and of course the big scar.

I had the operation on Thursday and they kept me overnight. Now I am so sore with nasty gash across the front of my neck. they used glue to hold it together. I have a sore throat too. I get hungry - eat - get nauseaus - then a headache. what a mess.
