A few months back, I involved myself in a heated discussion about Korean telenovelas being aired on Philippine tv. My contention was our people could not afford slapstick characters that could be detrimental to our growth as a people. Two weeks ago, I chanced upon an afternoon show called Beethoven Virus. I particularly like the music the orchestra was playing. Before I knew it, I was watching a Korean telenovela. And I waited for it the next day, and the next. Now I know that even if the Korean dramas are as dragging as the Phillipine plots, the characters are deep and very human.

Hiya eileen, If you can´t beat them join them some old English saying. Quite a long time back now when the Spanish or Hispanic Soap Operas hit the Spanish Television here we had some really dreadful ones that were on. The one they did not give even a vote for was one called "La Dama de Rosa". It was written by a very talented playwright. Contrary to what they predicted it became a big hit an enormous hit and loads of People were watching it even the Tourists (grin). The Characters are very human most of them specially the Mother. All the rest played a really good part I thought the Mother and the Sister played the really best parts and of course the main Character. This is what happens with these soap operas that some of the characters can be really terrible but the one or two that are the best really don´t appear every day and they don´t give them much importance in the general appearances either. But they are the ones that usually keep you watching it to see what they get up to next. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifKs6_q3rq8&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bg-Ji_fikoc This very short piece from you tube is a good overall bit. Not much but you can see that the lady with the shortish brown hair who is called Lucia cupping Tito Clemente´s face is the one who does one of the best interpretations. She is one of my favourite ones sort of how you would like everyone to be. I have added a second piece where the mother lucia is asking Tito to love or leave her Daughter. It´s in Italian so the voice of lucia has changed quite a lot too because she has been doubled. This is all I could find quite unbelievable considering the coverage it had then.

Hiya eileen, "La Dama de Rosa", this will always be my favourite Soap Opera above any other because in spite of all the pros and contras it has had surrounding it it made it big time. Most will remember it and others will smirk but I have not found one apart from "Corazon Salvaje" another great Telenovela which was really more dramatic than the other. Lucia was a great Character in that Series and the other Daughter who played along side her and a couple of other characters as well that I liked they were dramatic but funny. Lucia was the Mother to everyone you see in that and her favourite phrase in Spanish was at least my favourite phrase was "tu vas a ver Tito Clemente tu vas a ver". She was a Character that most People would have as an ideal Mom loving and caring and never out of place never. Tito who was supposed to be the Villain but not really it´s just that they thought he was was loved very much by Lucia. She treated him like a Son. This Actress gave much credibility to the Series sadly she is no longer with us but I think that she must have been a great Actress in other things too. http://il.youtube.com/watch?v=twg9mllUmJ0 This is part of "Corazon Salvaje", not an affiliate link it´s to do with this response and nothing else. Hope you like it. xxx

so far, the only Korean telenovela i am watching with my wife is Queen Seon Deok. i like the story since this is history of Korea. and you can tell that we, Asians have really great histories of our own. i like the story goes and because of that, i can't wait to see the ending and searched the internet about the story and the history of Korea. aside from that, they dubbed the whole story to our local dialect which makes us understand and be more interesting to the Filipino viewers.

hello eileen, the only Asian i have watch was the first F-4 version Meteor Garden and Meteor Rain. then, there Jumong and the other korean novel. but the rest, i got tired of watching it because it's almost all the same to me, telling they're novel and history. when are we going to recreate our entire history again

THe only shows where I could watch our own history was when i was watching bayani or movies of jose rizal. But the question is, is jose rizal our only popular, most worthy historical figure to make movies on? Don't we have other influential people in our history? We should have something like Jumong and Queen Seondeok kind of entertainment as well instead of those fairy tale drama crap that's so popular these days.

Hi Eileen!! I've been hook with korean novelas long before it has become very popular in the Philippines. Yes, Beethoven Virus is also a very good tv show to watch. I actually watch in the aftee. I think that it is very fun and very nice to watch. Korean novelas usually are very deep and has a very nice plot. We are somewhat bored with Philippines plots and I have grown fond of watching one;.

hi eileenleyva oh my I can see how you must have felt and then to find you were really enjoying it,b ut seriously anything with 'Beethoven music has to be pretty darned good if they take care not to hoke things up around it. You say the characters were deep and very human, so that tells you that you really did like it then. we all have done this I am sure, like I once told my son that the movie Field ofDreams didnt sound very appealing but I watched the dvd with him and that was a wonderful movie. so it just goes to show you cannot always judge right after all. So I have learned to keep a more open mind about things.
