Which gymnasts are your favourites?

I have loved gymnastics since I was a child in 1980. I wondered who you like as gymnasts, whether you have favourites from the older stars (Nelli Kim, Nadia Comaneci, Olga Korbut, etc.) or whether you prefer modern stars (Liukin, Shawn Johnson, Porgras, Tweddle, etc.)? Do you have favourite teams that you support? I tend to support GB, Russia and Romania.

Well, it's good to see a new country in the world of gymnastics. I mean, GB had been part of gymnastics even in the past because we all know that they're not the powerhouse of great gymnasts. For so many years, it was a battle between Romania and Soviet Union, with the latter dominating the competitions. For today's generation, I'm looking forward to see these gymnasts succeed: Jordyn Wieber, Victoria Komova, Aliya Mustafina, Ana Porgras, Anastasia Grishina, and a CONSISTENT Rebecca Bross.

Yes, it is good to see lots of different nations capable of gaining medals at top level. The French team are very good, Italy, Germany, lots of nations coming up the ranks too, besides the old East European superpowers. I saw Komova, Grishina, Porgras & Mustafina at the Europeans. Ana was injured so below par, but the 3 Russians are excellent, Komova is a wonderful talent & if she stays fit, I think she could win the next Olympics.

I have never really been that mad on gymnastics although I do of course re,e,ber Olga Korbut. I was never the build to do gymnastics although a couple of my daughters did it for a while. I suppose that I would have to say that I support the UK although I know that the Russians are very good at it.

It was Olga Korbut's birthday yesterday, she's now 55, can you believe it? I still think of her as 17 at the Olympics! I love watching her, such a creative and daring gymnast. The Russians are still great, of course, but it is wonderful to see the British team winning top medals these days too. At the European Championships a couple of weeks ago, the women finished 2nd behind Russia but beating the Romanians!

I don't know what it is, but I haven't really enjoyed gymnastics recently. I think 2000 Olympics were the last time I really did. As for my favorites, I have a whole list. The very first gymnast I really cheered on was Kim Zmeskal. I also liked Dominique Moceanu, Dominique Dawes, Tasha Schwikert. Non Americans I liked were Natalia Laschenova (the first big competition I saw were the World Championships in 1989), Lavinia Milosevic, Lilia Podkopayeva, Dina Kotchekova, Alexandra Marinescu, Tatiana Gutsu. Most of my favorites come from the US, Romania, Russia or Ukraine.

Russia, Romania, and China are definitely my favorite teams, and I'm a big fan of Svetlana Khorkina and Kerri Strug.
