Sun rainbow

sun rainbow - rainbow around sun near Lake Natomas

I walked to the lake today. It was a really nice day, partly cloudy and windy, but not too cool and not too hot. On my way back I noticed a rainbow up in the clouds. It wasn't your typical arc rainbow, it was in a circle around the sun. And when I looked more closely, there was also an inner circle around the sun. So I got two pictures with my cell phone camera, and here is the one with the rainbow. Cool, huh?

I'm really pleased at how it came out considering it's just a cell phone photo. PS I posted the other picture under response #1.

Those are pretty neat. I have had others mention them or post photos of them online. They are called sundogs. I am glad you had a peaceful walk. Is that what you do on your lunch hour? You are going to be so healthy.

I try to walk at lunch, either to the lake or along the river if I have time. Now if I could just eat less.

That is an awesome, picture dawn. It is cloudy here no sun down in the valley, so no chance of rainbow with no sun. It almost looks like it's upside down. Hope you enjoyed your walk to the lake. Have a great day!!!

If they're that skeptical, they'll probably just accuse me of photoshopping it!

Nature has a great way of keeping us company and showing us reminders of just how much we need to be appreciative. Thanks for sharing them. :)

I haven't seen a rainbow like that before. We saw many beautiful bows in New Zealand but we were all staggered by the one that seemed to come down in fron of the mountain behind it and end almost at the roadside. I wish I could post the photo of it but myLot is not cooperating. I've never had problems before, but I can't post any.

That is pretty cool! But what I'm even more impressed with is the quality of the picture. I didn't know pictures from camera phones can look like that! So, what kind of phone you got Dawn? Not that I'm looking to get a new one. I'm stuck on a 2 year contract, after all. LOL Happy mylotting!

Hey there Alice. I'm hanging in there. How 'bout you? There's no need to fear. I'm not about to waste money on buying another, especially when the one I have is practically brand new and works beautifully. Granted it doesn't have a camera on it, but I didn't see the need of getting one when I ordered it as I have a digital camera already. It may not be built into my phone, but that's okay as that feature wasn't important to me anyway. I was thinking more on the lines of maybe getting one in the future when both my phone and camera don't happen to work anymore. But until that day comes I'm content with what I have.

Yeah, not bad for a cell phone camera. It's an LG Lotus LX600v10... AND it's purple!

Hi Dawn--the queen of rainbows, THanks for sharing this with us here. This is something great to be thankful with. So cool, relaxing and amazing. I shared my experience in one of your respondent's box about my experience with moon and a planet/star. It happened last month but i feel bad that i was not able to take a picture of it.

Cool one. It's rare to see some like that since rainbows only appear on misty skies right?

after dark rainbow - rainbow taken after sunset in AZ
It must be pretty rare. I don't remember ever having seen one before. Here's another rare one. I took this in Arizona on the way to my niece's wedding. The sun had already set and yet you could see the rainbow still.

Awesome! From what I've learned from our science class in high school, sun rainbow is a sign of a coming storm. But I like your photo capturing one of the wonders of nature.

Hi merced legurpa: Exactly, this is a wonder of the nature without a doubt, such a beautiful view. Thanks also for the information, I didn't know it has a relation with rain. Did it rain after this picture was taken? Thanks for your answer. Have a nice day. ALVARO

Those are real nice and unusual photos you took,Dawnald! I've never seen a Circular rainbow before.. Apparently,"regular" rainbows would appear circular, too,if you could be high up enough to be able to view them-the horizon at ground level prevents you seeing all of it..usually,you'll only get the effect when the sun's at a cetain angle before or after noon..looks like you've managed to capture one of those rare occasions when the sun was showing through rain cloud to produce the effect!

Blessings upon you Dawnald, for you have indeed been blessed to be able to be in and see the beauty that surrounds you. Most ppl don't see it even when it's right in front of their eyes. Yes, Sundogs are very rare and beautiful phenomena, rainbows of all kinds can be explained scientifically. Or we can just look up and breathe a sigh and say THANK YOU for allowing me to see this wonderful creation! I get the sense that you do the latter. I've been inside a rainbow before there really is something magickal about it. Everything glowed gold all around, the trees, the grass, the very air was gold, it was amazing. I now know why the Celts believed a pot of gold laid at the end of a rainbow.

Wow...that way amazing photo you have here. The sun had a halo around it and it's rare that you can actually witness something unique like that and it also has a rainbow up in the clouds which is truly mesmerizing because I am a rainbow lover. I really appreciate the beautiful gift of nature and that makes me realize that life here on earth is beautiful if you only forget the bad side to it which is commonly done by humans itself. I also wish that we have a lake somewhere here in our locality because that would be fantastic. Like you have to chill out and see just some creature playing in the water. That would be a marvelous thing. The relaxing moment as if you are close with mother nature.

It is really nice having a lake and a river near work that I can walk to at lunch. But the rainbow effect is something I had never seen before and it was really special!

Well now, that really is something else. I don't think that I've ever seen anything like this in my life. These days where the majority of the phones that we carry with us almost everywhere we go having cameras on them is really awesome because we are able to capture pictures of things that we never would have been able to take pictures of in the past. Just think, if you hadn't had your cell phone camera with you, the story would have just been heresay.
