Mars has hardly any atmosphere. It's around 10% the thickness of earth's atmosphere, and it's mostly CO2, not oxygen and nitrogen. Also, since the atmosphere is so much thinner, far more radiation hits the surface, and the heat can't stay in. So, what you have is an extremely cold, radiation filled planet with no air and very little water. Its great to learn more about the planet, and to keep studying it with satellites and landers, but trying to go and live there is a really bad idea.
