Why do Horses needs to wear a Horseshoe?

I was browsing Traffic Roundup website when I came across a horseshoe picture and it makes me wonder why horses have shoes while the other animals don't have. Do you think it's fair that they have shoes?

well i searched in the internet and it says to protect their hooves from wear and tear.
well i thought its for traction i guess i was wrong

I haven't even been around horses in a long time, but I am thinking the horse shoe protects the horse's hooves. I think it keeps them from splitting especially on harder surfaces.
