Why do they lock gas station bathrooms? Are they afraid someone'll clean them?

Yet another funny question from my teen daughter=) The only logical reason I can think of is if there is a window in the bathroom, and someone had to get away with stealing merchandise. Other than that, it's pretty dumb. But then again, all kinds of people go into the gas station and who knows what they would do inside the gas station bathroom... Ugh. Another fact: the bathrooms are always filthy. I never use the gas station bathroom unless it is an absolute emergency, because no one ever goes in there to check everything out. Lord knows who goes in there and what they do=/

Hi, Shadow! The station I usually go to has brought the restroom inside, and made it absolute beautiful. It's kept locked so that it can stay that way. I've never encountered another one that does that. The owner's wife decided to do it up this way when she was pregnant and using the restroom more than usual. She hated the way it was, so she changed it. It's now a lot like the ones found in better restaurants.

Well for me on the contrary locked bathroom are most of times very clean and tidy. So Imho thats the reason, you have a bit more control over who goes in etc.

To prevent theft I believe and maybe other bad things. They make it so you have to come to them for the keys and that way they can see if you have any items from their store on you and see who you came in with.

Oh my gosh, I almost fell off my chair here laughing at your title! Tell you're daughter that was the best laugh I had all day, HAHAHA! I really think and this is only a guess, is that they lock the bathrooms so no one can get attacked. Most of the time the bathrooms are on a outer wall outside the building, and you can't see them from the inside. Any weirdo can go in there and wait until someone comes in. Kinda spooky hm? That's what I think anyway. I'm kind of glad they do that. Unless you're talking about inside? Then I don't have a clue why they would lock it, and yes, the bathrooms are disgusting.

I actually asked this once, as it made no sense to me either. I was told because they have people pull in to just use the restroom, and then leave without buying gas or any other merchandise. So if you want to use their restroom you have to buy something first.

Ha ha that's very funny. I avoid gas station loos because I have never found one that was ever clean enough to use. I would rather burst my bladder than sit on a loo in one of those places! LOL.

I think they locked the door that way you have one last chance to think twice about the decision to use a gas station bathroom.
