Scent marking

My Dad has this remark he loves to make when the cat rubs against him. He says, "I used to think the cats liked me, but now I have learned that they are just marking me as their property." True, but look at it this way, Dad. Why would the cat bother marking you if it didn't like you? Have YOU been scent marked today?

hehe...my cat is marking me right now there were times when i came back from a friend's place (who has a cat), and when i get back home, my cat runs off after taking a few whiffs of my pants. then after a while it comes back and starts rubbing itself all over my legs just to 'reaffirm its property'.. hehe

We have no house cats at this time, only the barn kitty and she doesn't do this, she just wants tummy rubbs. I do miss our house cats.

We are both suffering withdrawel. Our problem is our age and we don't want to have someone else have to take care of our pets. But if one shows up at our door we will read that as a sign.

hi dawnald nope sad to say if Ihad one hundred extra dollars each month for the rent i could have a cat, course then i wou ld need litter, litter box and cat food plus the cat of course. so that would be even more money needed. but I do so love cats and in all the various apartments we lived in nobody would allow one cats or dogs.birds and fish okay but who makes a pet out of a fish or a bird? anyway I did not get scent marked today.sadly. miss not having a cat.

Some retirement communities encourage voluteers to bring in pets to interact with the residents.

Some apartments allow them, but then they charge an extra deposit...

Not today. I think that if they mark you that they want to keep you.

Not in the traditional way no. This morning about an hour ago, my cat Precious walked around my ankles begging for the food we stored in the fridge for him. But, he didn't "sent mark" as that part of his body never touched me. Though he will do it several times throughout the day for certain I know. He always does.

I wouldn't want to be sprayed (yech) but they do rub their faces on me, of course.

I have at least one that greets me at the top of the stairs and tries to rub my ankles all the way down, complaining loudly each time I step on a foot or tail. It is kind of like, "I'm first, I'm first) If i have a lap at any time the drooler lands on me. Princess seldom want to mark anything or love anyone, but the moment she does, you better pay attention.

Yes, first thing this morning. Rosie sleeps on my bed with me and that is how she says hello every morning as soon as my feet touch the floor. My other feline Hewy can’t be bothered, he’s too busy trying to figure out a way to get to the bird cage! I agree that a cat would not mark you as his or her property if he or she didn’t like you!

He does have a little 'lap' time in the evenings while we are all watching T.V. and I am hoping as he gets older that time will become longer and longer.

Every morning my big old Smokey Bones jumps up to give me a hug and scent mark me. He puts his paws around my neck and rubs the side of his face and mouth against my cheek. Once this is complete, he's off to see the rest of the family and tell them good morning, too. He makes my day with that lovely hug!

Everyday I go to the stable to work I get rub on by at least one cat and horse while I am out there! Those animals love me! I think the cats do it just so they get attention! Horses usually do it because they want to scatch an itch on their forehead! Doesn't bother me at all!

I had never heard this about cats before. I thought they had other ways of marking their property. This will give new meaning to how much a cat likes me the next time one rubs against me. Here I am thinking the cat is just being friendly.

It's both. A cat isn't going to scent mark you if they don't like you.

That is just too funny. I once rescued a yorkie from an abusive home and sure enough this puppy took over my ex G/F's dad. This guy would not let his daughter and wife get in his classic 1959 DeSoto car without careful inspection, but would take the dog into it and let it ride with him. lol

Is that true? I didn't know that. I thought only dogs mark their properties. I also thought that cats like me by rubbing their body in my legs. But I think its fine. And your right. I think they still like me because they're marking me as their property. Its kinda weird though.

Yep, it's true. Far as I know, it's something only the cats can smell.

I have not been marked today.. I wish I had cats but it is a bit difficult if I want to travel - so who would take care of them? But when I see a cat somewhere, I usually try to talk with it and make friends, and I feel so happy when it comes and rubs against my leg.. I feel that the cat likes me. I take it as a proof that our Creator - who has made the animals, has meant us to feel happy for their friendship. Our pets are a great gift, and I am especially grateful for the cats and dogs..

How funny! My cat always waits for me to come out of my room in the morning. I usually go into the kitchen, and he'll come around to rub up on my leg. I love him but this can be so annoying sometimes!!!! I try to push him away (he's been shedding lately) and he'll turn right back around and rub up on my other leg. He''ll even rub on the carpet. I think he's a very territorial kitty. And also a very curious one!! +)

You need to comb or brush that cat to help him get rid of all that lose hair. A cat who is not curious is either sick or very old.

Hi "dawnald". Interesting topic. Yes, I have a Siamese cat named "Pepsi" who "owns me and not the other way around. She comes and goes when she feels like it. "DEMANDS" to be fed or come in the house. Yep, I would say she has marked her property; ME! I love her because she's also very affectionate. Most cats are rather distant and stuck up. Happy MyLotting.
