Can someone please explain to me the use of an iPad. Is it just a smaller version of an Apple laptop, or is there more to it? What benefits does it have compared to a laptop? I ask, because I want to get myself a laptop for mobility, (although I still have my desktop pc), but I need to know more about the new iPad before I make my decision. Any information would be greatly appreciated, especially if you are an iPad user.

Gee that's too bad. What's wrong with him? I'm nursing a sick kitten myself, and that's stressful enough...

Well I got an iPad from my girlfriend as a gift for a project I've helped and done for her. It's a 64GB Wi-Fi. And these gadgets help me a lot for my daily routines on my profession as graphic and multimedia designer, and also with other extra works. ok. The iPad is not a computer or even a tablet so period, you can not compare the iPad on a netbook or laptop. Just like Steve Jobs of Apple, Inc. "it is in between a Laptop or a smart phone". It has no USB ports, card reader, camera and physical keyboards. Multitasking are limited, of course, there standby or background applications like on messengers, twitters or mail applications, etc... Anyway on iPhone you can check anything or open notes or do other things while on call. There are also an third party application where you can do multitasking effectively. The applications are largely different from a computer or laptop. The applications and games on the iPhone can also have on the iPad, and there already more than 2,000 applications for iPhones or iPad and still growing. You can have applications like word processor, spreadsheets and presentations like the iWorks application from Apple, Inc. It is great for reading E-Books or i-Books. Reading manuals, comics, pdf files, documents, spreadsheets, presentations. It is like a Kindle from Amazons but this more great because you can listen to music while reading. Can also produce documents on a word processing application and other desktop stuffs while on a Cafe or just waiting for someone outside the office or home. Also great for browsing the internet. Photo viewing and nice as for a digital photo frame on the desk. I like watching HD movies while lying on bed. I scanned some of my projects and profiles for my client previews. Scanned a blueprint house plan for one my other projects. I can sketch and draw on the iPad. Its a small gadget from Apple but it has lot of great stuffs. If I'm you, must have visit a local Apple Store or reseller to have a physical view of an iPad. And also to have more information about the iPad physically. If iPad is not enough for you how about an Apple MacBook. To know more information about Apple iPad or the Macbook other stuffs of Apple, Inc. just visit apple.com or just search on youtubes and watch videos for reviews or demos or even unboxing of iPad or Apple Mac users.

The Ipad is more than twice the cost of a netbook like ACER's Eee machines so if cost is an issue, I'd go with the netbook. I'm not real keen on touch screen keyboards either, they seem to lack something that a "traditional" keyboard has but maybe thats just me being old fashioned.

I know what you mean about the keyboard - I am probably old fashioned too! I like to plonk away on a traditional keyboard! The iPad seems to have limited features for my needs, so I'm leaning more towards a laptop with every comment I receive. Thanks so much for commenting, I appreciate it.

if you have an iphone you will have an idea what IPAD is, it is like a blown up ipod, limited features and is not comparable to laptop (well, if you use your laptop for browsing purposes, picture viewing and video streaming it my suit you need, but if you use your laptop for business like word processing/document processing and presentation IPad can't give you those better buy notebook.

No, I don't have an iphone, but I think you have answered my question grayxenon! I use my pc for word processing a lot, so the iPad might not suit my purposes after all, and it seems to have limited features compared to a normal laptop. Thanks so much for your input.

To me these seem like a rather expensive 'toy'!! The notepads are excellent for when travelling, you can also buy small disc drives if you need one.

I don't have an iPad but I do have an Acer netbook. I think they're probably very comparable. The only advantage I can see, at least in my netbook, is that it is smaller and lighter. It came with Windows 7 trial version but I bought the full version and installed that. It works great! It has all the features of a normal-sized laptop or desktop, it's just much smaller and lighter, which is what I was after. It does not have a CD rom but I rarely want to use CDs in my computer anyway. If I ever do need it later, I could buy an external one and just plug it in or I can use the CD rom from my desktop because I have my netbook connected to my desktop. I can view all information from both computers using either one. I'm pretty sure the same can be done with an iPad. The keyboard is a bit smaller, too. Not much, but it did take a little getting used to. Now that I have, I don't have a problem with it, although when I want to use my desktop for whatever reason now, it seems HUGE! LOL

I want a laptop for the mobility it will give me, but now I'm undecided whether to get an iPad instead. Of course, it's a completely different operating system to what I am used to with my pc, but I would get used to it in time. I must admit, I like the idea of the touch screen on the iPad. Thanks for your input, I really appreciate it.
