Why are Filipinos not too interested in the World Cup?

Or soccer for that matter. I think we are the only country in the world which has not caught the World Cup fever. We have better chances in soccer since we are built light and can run faster. We have a lot of open spaces. But we are a basketball-crazy nation when we are not suited for it - face it, we are short. Why do you think we ignore soccer? Do you like soccer or basketball more?

I think it's because we don't have much a chance in the world cup. Not that we're not good, it's more of our government doesn't support football (or soccer in the U.S.) as much as they support basketball. We also don't have much football fields here to practice in. Unlike basketball, almost every eskinita here has a makeshift court. I personally like football (again, soccer for the U.S.) than basketball. I played both sports and I find football more fun.

hello there, we also don't have that much in baseball, soft ball, badminton and tennis. so many sports that doesn't really took the attention of the government, only those that are popular. even in the basketball in the middle east, our team isn't that good to beat every one there

Not to mention that the equipment's expensive. The ball itself is expensive.

I guess lack of government support is a factor but then again there are nations, especially in Africa, where there is little government support too but soccer is still popular with the locals. They make do with dusty roads and all they really need is a ball. As you pointed out, every street or alley in the Philippines has a makeshift court. Why did we choose to make makeshift basketball courts rather than makeshift soccer fields. These makeshift basketball courts do not follow international measurements. As long as there is space, a hoop, then a court will rise. So why not a goalpost instead? I think Filipinos will do better in soccer. I do not know why we obsess over a sport ruled by giants.

simply in basketball you do many highligth moves which people can easily appreciate while on soccer are few, only kickshot and headshot (hahaha).

I agree. Plus the size of the basketball court is just right that the game can be played fast and yet can be seen by the audience. I like knowing who threw a shot and not rely on the announcer. I don't really see how you can strategize in a soccer field. Although its fun to play soccer, its not as fun to watch it.

blame that to the spaniards, who unlike americans taught their ways..Spaniards treated us a merely slaves, they did not want us to be a part of their culture.. imagine 333 years of spanish rule, and about a decade or 2 from the americans yet american influenced prevailed..

I find soccer or football also boring the scoring is too slow. Like they said basketball is the sport we like which is more fun to watch. Although I'm not basketball fanatic but when I watched a game in our school back then it is enjoying.

Personally, I am not interested with the sport as well. When I watch one, I feel bored as well. I think that is one sport that is not very popular in our country fairly because there are a few schools that encourage such sports. If you would look around only private schools can afford to accommodate to put soccer filed in their school grounds most public elementary and high schools could not afford to put up a soccer field in their schools as it requires a large space and an open field. So what happens is Basketball court is the next best thing they could put in their campuses. That is why the sport is much popular in our country than soccer.

In my province most of the public schools have complete basketball courts. I guess they could afford to spare a small portion of land and most government officials do promote this sports than other sports. On good advantage of basketball is that you can easily setup a makeshift court in a place that is really small. If you would notice if you visit small barangays they can setup a small court on the road. For soccer even though you can setup a smaller scale but you need to have an open space because when the play becomes too intense they could destroy property if they would kick hard and would reach some private homes and destroy windows and worst hurt people unintentionally.

I doubt if public schools have a real basketball court inside their grounds, probably just makeshift ones. There is a misconception really that soccer can only be played in a full-blown soccer field. I think Africa has shown that it can be also a backstreet sports like the way we play our basketball here.

I like basketball more. I admit I have never watched a soccer game before but a little when it was featured in the Movie She's the man. I don't understand the rules, all I know is that you have to kick the ball and enter it in a goal. I find it boring or maybe I am not really into it. NBA is more interesting to me. All of the fans of soccer are now in craze because of FIBA or FIFa, so sorry I am not into soccer so I don't know the exact term for that.

We have about the same level of understanding and interest in soccer. My mind begins to wander when I have to watch a soccer game. Yeah, NBA's more interesting to me too. Did you watch Game 7?

Hi advocate. I am guilty of that. I am not a fan of the world cup. It's not I don't like I haven't got used to watching it. We don't have a cable tv at home which is more update than watching it in studion 23...

Truth to tell, I'm also not a fan of World Cup. At least you have an excuse, no cable tv at home - I don't. I don't even look at the sports news in the papers or listen to the news report about the World Cup.

Seems like I am the only Filipino who enjoys soccer over basketball, even when I was small. I do watched re-runs on local channels of soccer games even if the signal was not clear in the province (I grew up in the province, and I am talking about my first addiction to soccer mid of the year 1990's, meaning we had no cable). I enjoy it. I would want to disagree on the statements here that soccer is not action-packed like basketball. It indeed is action-packed, and rebounds are more thrilling to watch in soccer. How I wish we can catch up on this largest sport in the world. Guess we are the only ones not addicted to it, Indonesia and other Asian countries are all into it, we are the only ones who don't. Korea and Japan made it to quarter finals this year, a sign that we can do excel too on this sports, I hope we can get our team into the World Cup soon as well.

People here (including me) don't find soccer interesting because we are not familiar with the nuances of the game. There are some responders here who played soccer at some point in their lives, but I think you are the first to admit being a fan. Forgive my ignorance, but how is it more action-packed in terms of rebounds? Hope you can school me on this one. I do want to be interested but I just seem to doze off when watching.
• Philippines
28 Jun 10
It was just my opinion, I would not force you guys here to love the sports I am enjoying a lot. Regarding my idea of soccer being more action packed, especially during rebounds and dribble, is because it's the time when one holds his breath praying that his favorite team would be able to get the ball from the opponent or for the others hoping that he can safely turn the ball to other team mates without being intercepted by the opponent. Maybe the reason why some people are dozing off watching this is because people are waiting for the goal to happen, and not enjoying every action happening on the center field. This is a bit complicated to explain, I am not good on sports writing, sorry.

I don't know about you but for me soccer is just boring. I like a game that's fast-paced and engaging and soccer is just not it. Although I'm fascinated by how the game is played, the long wait for any team to score just doesnt appeal to me.

Like you I find the sport boring too. :-) The playing field is so huge that by the time the players get to the goal, I've lost my interest. They look like little toy soldiers playing there, and the fact that I cannot clearly see their faces is disappointing to me. I don't know who did what. Take the game of US vs England. If I were watching in the field I would have had no idea why the US scored. Good thing there was an analyst in the show.

because generally Filipinos are thrilled on high face, fast action sports like basketball and boxing, soccer can be a snore feast to watch especially when players keep running all play long.. we don't like technical games so much, even in boxing we prefer slugger/fighter type over those technically sound boxers (like money may).. we want entertainment and action.. you right we could excel in soccer only if we could find passion to it..
• Philippines
18 Jun 10
That's an interesting insight. Indeed we like gore and action to the max! We don't like to work on the technical side of sports. With a field so wide its a miracle they even collide. Soccer seems to work at separating players and so you're probably right, it does not appeal to us. After all we are a nation who laugh at Willie's toilet humor...

Maybe because the people who invented that game never got to influence us that much? Or that their culture failed to seep in into ours? Most of the games we know now were taught to us by Americans (not sure, just guessing), and well Americans did get to our country right. I wonder what games the Spaniards taught us aside from making Leche Flan (which is not a game)! LOL

Basketball was invented by a Canadian, James Naismith, although he started it in the US. Soccer was played by the Japanese and the Chinese in the early centuries, probably long before the Europeans played it. I guess the Japanese were not interested in making cultural contributions when they came to our country. The Americans way of colonizing is more mental (very effective though) than physical, and probably that is why they left lasting impressions on us.

well in our history, we are greatly influenced by us so it that is why basketball and baseball is in our past/present. Baseball was popular here in the 50's to 60's. but for me i don't really like soccer because i find it more of a pushing/pulling/kicking and not much of getting goals. But if they shorten the field maybe ill watch it.

It's true that we have been greatly influenced by our colonial past. The Americans way of colonizing was not just physical, but more of cultural. I wonder though why we are not American football addicts like them but we love basketball.
• Philippines
17 Jun 10
Yes I ask myself too why we Filipinos don't have a penchant for games like soccer. Well really it's true,we are not suited to play basketball games because of our short height. And to think we import players from other nation just to justify the basketball game. I think it's a kind of cheating. I don't like watching the PBA but I love to watch NBA; not because I'm not for Filipinos but because I hate to watch basketball game that is played sometimes by imports.
• Philippines
18 Jun 10
I've stopped watching PBA games but I still watch the collegiate games if my school is playing. Like you I don't see the allure of watching imports play with us. For me its degrading - they get the least talented player in the US, anyone who will agree to playing here for a season and turn him into a star here. That tells me that we can only play with the worst player of the US.

I think we just never caught on. Basketball has always been the dominant sports in this country, and with the advent of cable TV in the mid 90s, it was easier to be exposed to the NBA, that, added to the PBA, just made the exposure even greater. funny, I've heard that same argument from my dad. We're quick, fast and agile. We would be well suited to a sport that favors those attributes, instead of height and brawn. I also think it's a matter of marketing. With enough of a push, anything can become widely accepted. And to the last question -- basketball, hands down. Soccer just seems so bland. It seems like nothing is happening. And an average of 2 goals in 60 minutes of "action"?
• Philippines
26 Jun 10
Well in fairness, there is no soccer league the likes of NBA and PBA so really there is nothing to watch. Probably contributed to our lack of interest. You have to admit that we are not really suited for basketball. We are vertically challenged race. But height is not that much of an advantage in soccer.

Soccer is not very familiar in our country. Maybe that is the reason why mostly Filipinos including me are not interested in World Cup. I don't say that soccer or football is no good but personally I found it boring. Going there coming here, to and fro. Well. this is only my opinion. But I think our government and other sport institution must know that we have more chances of winning several tournament in soccer than basketball which soccer does not need height advantage.

I have to agree with you that we Filipinos find this sport boring that we lose interest in it. I get tired just watching them run back and forth the field.

It's the lack of Government support that's why we're not participating in WC. If you would talk to athletes that's their only wish from the government, to be supported like what other countries do. Do you think a soccer player would be motivated if he still needs to buy his own equipment just to participate in a game?

because most filipinos don't like to ran around(laziness), and mapagod ng husto unlike basketball where there have covered courts.
• Philippines
17 Jun 10
I like both but since we are a basketball craze country, it cannot bring us more improvement with our game on soccer. I don't think we ignore soccer, in fact in my place I used to play once a week and our FC is joining tournaments one after the other. I think Filipinos are not really interested watching World Cup games because they are busy on social networking sites, which they used to do everyday on their lives. World Cup is not that really fun to watch especially our country is not included in the roster of teams.

My youngest brother was a soccer player from HS to college and so as a dutiful sister I tried to follow the game. I don't know why but it was not really exciting to watch especially if there is no television coverage. Unlike the basketball games that my other brother played which made more sense to me. Do we even have a Philippine soccer team? Did we support them? I don't recall if we did.
• Philippines
17 Jun 10
I agree to that, soccer is not our game. It was not supported by other local sports authorities and influence Pinoys to play. Space, hmmmm for soccer? I haven't seen any ground to play such and indeed we do have more space for mini basketball courts rather than soccer field goal. Maybe if this is supported and be developed more as a Filipino sport, why not?
• Philippines
18 Jun 10
I don't think we need a lot of space to pick soccer and go crazy over it. The space needed to play street soccer is the same as the space taken up by makeshift basketball courts. In African countries, any open space is fine and the children just kick and toss a ball around. I really don't know why we are not a soccer-crazy country.

I just realized that actually. That you are not a soccer-crazy country. Otherwise you would equally be shouting and screaming as we do here. Yes, the opening of the World Cup was ignored here. We like basketball and boxing more, especially if its Manny Pacquiao who is fighting. Every time Manny fights, the entire Philippines would stand still. A big majority are glued to their television or even watch special satellite broadcasts in restaurants and cinemas when Pacquiao fights. In contrast, not a lot of people watched the opening of the World Cup nor care to follow the games. It's true that we are greatly influenced by the Americans and that is one of the reasons why we like basketball. Nevertheless, Americans also love soccer and football, both not popular here.

i think we have a delegation for the World Cup but for the "homeless". this are for poor but very good soccer players from different countries too. GMA should have donated even 1% of what was spend from the Independence Day celebration becuse our team need money to buy their own soccer shoes. i believe Filipinos have a good chance in the field of soccer. i just hope corruption in the gov't will be lessen and our leaders will understand that there are more important matters to be taken care of other than their personal agendas.

I've always loved watching soccer games. Sadly, I only get to watch those on youtube or through the net. If given a chance, I would want to be a part of a soccer team but I think it would be too late for me to start learning how to play that game. Another is that there are no soccer teams in our place so I don't know where to join any.

18 Jun 10
Its never too late to learn something new. Sadly, here in the Philippines there are not a lot of venues to learn soccer. Unlike badminton when it became a craze or basketball where there is a hoop in almost every alley or street. It is an easy game to pick up though if you like. If you have feet then you can kick.

Before you become good at it, you have to be interested in it. How would you know that you are good at it when you have not even tried it? We are more of the basketball and boxing type - we like tight and fast games with lots of violence and gore.
