Best friends?

What do you think makes a person a best friend? Personally, I think the term BEST FRIEND should be eliminated from english vocabulary! I don't think anyone is better than another, they just have different qualities that are fit for you. When people ask who my best friend is I simply reply I have one friend and her name is Magentha, everyone else is an acquaintance or irrelevant. So what are your views on it?

when you say best friend, it means that she/he cares and loves you no matter who you are. he/she will accept your differences/mistakes. she/he is willing to help you and never leave you. he/she will never forsake you. someone who will understand your weaknesses and strengthen you when you are weak, when you are down.

but wouldn't you say thats a definition of a friend -
Cares for you, understands you, helps you, accepts you, there for you through good and bad, etc..?
So what's the point of "best" friends. Why not consider only the ones that are like that to be friends and everyone else as I said, acquaintances or irrelevant!? That would help avoid the argument with some people who say you can't have more than one "best" friend lol :)

i do agree that we are all equal. but then for me, the word "best" in the word best friend is just a tag which refer to my closest friend. best in the sense that it is her company i best enjoy. its her talk i miss and enjoy best. its her care i am comfortable best and how i feel her love and genuineness to me best. so its not really to degrade other friends when i got her as best friend. its just a matter of what we share and have that for me she is my best.

In my account the best friend means, who understands us perfectly, and who gives the perfect advices in our critical positions.

i'm thinking about it. those people whom i have branded "best friends" weren't really the best friends i ever had. i just call them that to make it easy and for recognition purposes that at some point in my life they had become significant. But still i cannot say they are really my best friends because sooner or later, i am always able to find new friends that i really like more than my old friends. but among all my friends, there are really those who are special to me but even then, it doesn't always follow that they are the best. my best friend is Jesus Christ (excuse me for this). Every now and then, we are on the process of building friendship and relationships and i guess my best friend would be someone who knows me very well and someone whom i could share my dreams and ambitions.

I have this one friend who I can share everything with (and similarly, she can share everything with me). We don't have secrets from each other and even though we are currently going to university in different continents, she is always there for me when I need her and vice versa. I think that is what a best friend is :)
