There was a soldier who had fought in the Vietnam war. When he was about to go home he called his parents and told them that he was going to return. They talked for a while and then the soldier said: "One of my friends is coming with me. He was injured in the war and he only has one arm and one leg. He doesn't have a place to live" His parents replied: "We are sorry to hear that, maybe we can help him find a place to live" The soldier said: "No, I want him to stay with us" His parents replied: "No, we can't accept that, a person like that would be a terrible burden".
After the phone conversation the parents expected their son, but he didn't show up. A few days later the phone rang and the parents were told that their son had comitted suicide. They were asked to identify him. When they saw him they got a big shock...
...he had only one arm and one leg.

aw! that was so sad. i think the soldier should have tell the truth to his parents, if do that things might have be different. i don't really know how to react on it coz the mom just said what she feels for the friend but that was not for a son and besides the mom even offer some help to find a place to live for his friend. huh! i don't know, the soldier just have a wrong approach and he didn't trust his mom. i guess.

I also think that it would have made a difference if the soldier had told his parents the truth instead of making up the story about the friend. It seems like he took it for granted that his parents would have seen him as a burden, he but didn't know that, he just assumed that they would feel that way.

I never thought about it from that perspective, but that would have been really creepy. I can easily imagine that situation...

It is true that you can learn to live with one arm and one leg, I have met people who had a good life despite that kind of disability. The soldier you write about is in a different situation, and it must be extremely hard to cope with a situation like that

Yes, when he called his parents he was talking about himself. I think he made up the story about his friend to test their reaction, and when they said that his friend would be a burden because of his disability, he killed himself.
