With human life becoming wired intensely by means of mobile networks and internet, more and more people are hooked on to the virtual world more than the REAL. Increasing number of people are now socialising on the web than in person. The virtual world seems peaceful to them as the people they communicate with hardly annoy or break into arguments over the web. Though this may be good, its leading people to isolation by making them addicted to social networking on the web instead of real meetings. The day passes by in front of the computer and people dont step out of the house. This leads to a creepy loneliness that can lead to depression in people. Its the fact that they are not visually and verbally dealing with other people in life and not enjoying a CONNECT with the real world. Do you also think such a continous use of internet leads to depression?

Indulging in any activity in excess will surely lead to negative consequences in humans. As a part of this excessive internet browsing will also lead to negative tendencies such as depression. We should involve ourselves in any activity to a limited extent and not to extremeties. Now a days because of excessive usage of internet people have stopped meeting among themselves in person and even human relations get effected badly.

There are articles to the effect that excessive dependence on the net leads to depression. But if you can strike a balance between the two it is ideal. The net beside social networks can also give useful information. This information in the form of articles and books that can be downloaded and read will prove useful in real life situations.

Herro ilawise26 I do not believe that excessive internet (define excessive) leads to depression. I understand the theory of virtual world vs social interaction with people. Although I spend a lot of time on the internet, by choice, I also have social interaction. I have friends and interaction with like-minded (Born-again Christians) friends. If you measure the quantity of time, I have excessive. If you measure the quality of time, my social interaction is far better. I have a unique problem. If I am not playing on the internet I am depressed. That is a sure sign of depression for me. Prosperous mylotting

thats amazing texlady! like you pointed: if you dont use internet you get depressed(though not in the most literal sense i hope!) So the root cause is internet, since you are addicted to it..its actually leading to depression! :D However, what i am trying to put is that people get attached to the virtual world to such an extent that they stop mingling in person. That is what gradually leads to isolation and hence depression! Good day!

I have only experienced depression in the internet eveytime I come acroos ascam site and becomes a victim of it. But this depression is just mild and usually lasts for an hour or two. The internet does not cause depression. Excessive use of it does not also makes an individual depress. What depresses us is the choices that we make. We can choose to be in contact personally to the real world or just stay connected online. It all depends on the choices that we make.

Probably coz it has been mentioned before by psychiatrist that actual socialization is crucial to our well being. Being affiliated or connected to these social networking sites does not mean that you are a sociable person. Perhaps it may indicate otherwise because you would rather be in a non personal socializing medium that the actual face to face interaction. It does not uplift your mood at all if you are an internet addict. So one must go out and socialize for real.

Yes! In my case my depression increased because people on internet can be more hostile since they're protected by a screen.

If the INternet is an addiction then is bad also. Sometime internet usage become exessive just to fulfill a void in the person then it can continue to lead to depression.Internet is a tool and not necessary a solution to life problems. Internet can also be a pandora box leading to more problems. Especially if your become anti social and hide behind false profile and such.

I would agree. People need some form of human contact to thrive. It is understandable that virtual worlds and social networking sites are entertaining but these are simply mediums in order to interact with other people. These types of sites don't promote social skills and they don't teach people how to cope with difficult life lessons. A small amount of Internet is good while excessive Internet is damaging.

Yes! I do believe that excessive internet leads to depression. Running through your life without a social life is the worst thing you can do. Having a parallel virtual life has it goods to, but becoming an addict will ruin your life. I think that the advent of internet is one of the best things that happened, but it is too one of the most dangerous, so everybody should pay attention.
