So, if you have a product to sell, and you want to get the words out, how would you begin to market it? Sending advertising papers, like catalogs to local businesses through postal mail? Google adwords or search engine ranking? If so, how would you start a solicitation letter, can anyone show me some sample of it? I already have a website, but I couldn't afford the adword cost right now. How could you advertise it, can anyone teach me some methods?

Methods you mentioned above is used widely now but the effects are different for different company with different products. For example, the company that I work is one of the important and famous companies in China because its products are special and common people who if have no enough money and policy relationship can not build this kind of company easily,so generally the relative customers often find us actively and we often receive inquiries from them.So for our boss, promoting and selling products is not a difficult thing.
But when I promote general products,I will anaylise its customer population and show them the effect of my products, then I will give them privilege if they buy more.Maybe this is traditional, but in my opinion all promotion start from this.good luck

The web has a lot of freebies to offer, I guess you just have to surf more to find them. You can also send out flyers plus maybe a free sample of what you are offering from the street at least that way a lot of people would know your product on a first hand basis.
