Has working in retail made you dislike people?

I have been working in retail since I was 14 years old. Since then I have found that people just annoy the crap right out of me. I can not stand when people are unable to read a sign or yell at you. I hate when managers change the policy that is in place and make you look like you do not know what you are talking about! It makes me angry when I am serving a customer and another associate will come up to the customer and tell them that I am wrong. Is anyone else like this after working in retail for 10 years? Please explain.

I haven't worked for exactly 10 years in retail, but I have a year of experience. And I agree, some people are just rude and irritate you... but I guess I learned how to handle such people. I wouldn't say I loved the job so much, but I can't say I hate that much neither. In fact what the experience has done to me is that I've learned how to "spell" people... like, if a lady is overly talkative, giving her attention by chatting with her all the more is likely going to make her buy whatever I'm selling. But it doesn't always happen like that of course. As for grumpy people, I find it easier to deal with them by not being too friendly yet serious enough to answer their queries. For "dumb" customers, you really have to be naturally patient so it won't be such an effort dealing with them. For managers, well, I don't like them too. But I'm lucky I didn't have to see their face and work with them closely everyday haha. And I think it helps a lot to enjoy what you do when you have friends around you in the work place. No conflicts.

Some days it is very hard to be patient. Especially when the cash calls you constantly asking the same question and they have the flier right there in front of them. I have gotten good at reading customers and can usually tell when I can joke around with them or not. Some people are grumpy because we don't usually carry anything larger than an XL and that is understandable. I try to find them whatever we do have in a XXL but it is not very much. Someimes I'm spiteful and extra super nice with ice cream and sprinkles and freaking kittens and rainbows to people who are in a really bad mood. It's funny to watch them get even more upset because I am so darn happy. Occasionally it puts them in a better mood, which is always worth being sickeningly sweet!

Hahah LoL. So you learned how to handle some of them in your own way... well it's always different for everybody. Sometimes I work really slow and I'm doing it on purpose so I could kill the time without getting myself tired. haha. i hate b*tchY bosses. more than anything.

The speed in which I work is determined bu how nice someone asks me to do something. If I'm asked to do something when I get a chance I'll make more of an effort to get it done faster. If I'm told "do this now" I'm probably not going to drop what I'm doing.

I could rant for hours on this. 11 years in retail departmental management, 2 years retail security. The latter showed me how many scum bags drift through our stores unseen by the public, and how useless the judicial system is in dealing with them. As for the other 11 years. I could leave you with a few hours reading, but will summarise in no particular order..... 1. As Office manager it is my job to test the fire alarms because the Warehouse Manager is too busy. When I became Warehouse Manager, I was the only manager in at the time who could test it. 2. Your point about the customer being wrong is so correct. 3. The Warehouse is busy on a Monday, so I work on. The shop is busy on a Friday, so I should be available to help them: as the Manager is playing golf. 4. I am due to go home at 15:00, but must hand over to the Manager before leaving. Odd how he is always busy at 15:00. If I go home at 14:00 or 16:00, he is busy then too. 5. The favourite DM can't get more staff, so some of her workload goes to me:but I get no more help to deal with it. 6. Pay review is due. If you are on report during review, you get no raise. One month before review your performance is called into question. 7. I achieve my year's performance goals. As a result I get new tasks, or lose staff. Performance review therefore shows that I have missed targets. 8. I have issues with another DM about his staff use of warehouse. I get assertive, senior DM gets dissy. Solution: warehouse becomes part of his empire, problem handed back to me. 9. Emergency key holding. I live 10 miles away, and have keys. Manager and other DMs live in the same town as the shop, but do not hold keys. Only occasion that Manager has keys and there is a call out, he is lashed. I have to drive over and collect keys from him. 10. More on keys. A YEAR after I have left the store, I am still getting calls from alarm company to attend!! Does this sound familiar?

Yes yes this sounds familliar! We get performance reviews. I am given a sales goal to meet everyday, I have tasks to perform such as cleaning, stocking and putting up signs as well I have to serve every customer I see. Last review I was at 90% of my sales goal, had wonderful reviews about my customer service and my performance. However, I "Did Not Achieve" because I did not get 52 people (one per week) to sign up for the company credit card. I have had people call the store manager to say how wonderful I am at customer service but because I did not get 52 people to sign up for a credit card I failed as an associate in the eyes of the company. I do not work on cash, I have never been trained on cash and I therefore do not feel it is any of my business if someone has the company cradit card or not. I can occasionaly bring it up if there is a sale when you use the card or when someone asks the benefits fo the card, but it is very hard to get 52 people to sign up. My boss only got 4 last year...

Sometimes I don't think that it is always the managers fault but moreso the fact that it is a corporation. Corporations care more about the profit than their employees.

Yep. There is always another target to make sure that you fall short. When I left my retail employment I was earning a basic of around £12.5K. They replaced me with someone earning £8K. Nice money saving bonus for store manager (if I found a smilie to represent him it would probably be banned). I believe I once said no to one of his stupid initiatives. Everything went wrong from there........

It is true, retail definatly does not pay enough for what each associate has to deal with. There were always customers that I dreaded at the convenience store, but they were far out numbered by the customers I had who were pleasant.

I have worked in retail for several years. I have found just the opposite to be true. It has never made me dislike people. I think it has made me like people even more. It was one of the best experiences of my life and i am happy to have the chance to speak to people. Every once in a while, a disagreeable person would come along . That is just another challenge to accepting people for who they are. Retail should make you enjoy people, not dislike them.

You are the only person I have spoken to where retail has made them like people more! This is so refreshing! I am going to make an effort to follow your outlook and not let people bother me!

I have worked in retail and customer service for quite a bit of the positions I've held in the past and I can say.. that most people are a$$hole$. The customer is definitely not always right. They sometimes act as if they don't understand that we didn't make the policies, we just enforce them. And that if we say there's nothing we can, then by damn it ain't nothing we can do!! I have worked at these places in retail and customer service Sales Associate - Shoe Carnival Customer Service Professional - local call center Customer Service Associate - JCP Consultative Sales - Sears I have worked in several healthcare facilities as well. Patients are SOOOO much more easier to deal with because they realize that it is you they have to listen to... not the other way around...

You are right. The days of the customer always being right are over. I do not make the prices nor can I change them. I did not create the return policy, nor can I change it. I found convenience store customers were much more friendly than retail store customers. I have worked in clothing and in greeting card sales as well as at two different convenience stores.

I have been working in retail since 2002, its about 8 years. I often found annoying customer who try to break the company's rules, and the other side that customer must be serviced well like a king . I know what you feel when the managers change the policy and that policy is not make you feel better. All I do now is try to enjoy the situation, if I'm at the office I only think about the job and when I came home, I always forget anything about the job. So, with that way I am not feel stress every time.

I also try to leave my frustrations at work, but sometimes it is hard to do! Lately my job has not been too bad. We are given tasks to complete each day which make my day go faster and give me something to focus on. most people do not like the sheets but I find them not too bad.
