Was it originally flutter-by..which makes some sense.. how come they changed the name to butterfly a meaningless word..or does it have a meaning..?? Some tell its actually coined from "buttorfleoge", but can you tell buttorfleoge's etymology?? Do you know any such words ?? edify me.. all responses are welcome...

No idea kiddo! May be the person (in all probability a child) saw them roaming around the butter so he called them butter flies to differentiate them from ones that roamed on other things, you know. :)

Actually, you do have an idea. From my research you are close they use to steal milk and butter. Some say it's because of the yellow (butter) colored excrement from all butterflies.

Well, I don't know, but maybe entomologists here can help a lot to enlighten you about it. Maybe that fly loved butter that's why! (joke).

I like the term Flutterby too. I think it is more appropriate. I am not sure from where it originated though.. But I even made some items with the term Flutterby on it. I think it sounds cuter.. :-) I made this pretty bag a couple years ago. http://www.zazzle.com/dont_let_life_flutterby_bag-149106692819038881

This is really cute, I like Flutterby also. Maybe the person had something like a spoonerism problem (where you confuse words or put them in the wrong order) but then again there is probably a scientific reason!

spoonerism..that is something we have to consider.. may be ..it was the reason.. thanks
