What type of music don't you get?

I would have to say rap is a type of music I never got into it. Of course, something like that just seems like a acquired taste but its a taste that I never acquired. It just seems so loud and obnoxious to me most of the time. So what type of music have you never really gotten into?

I was just scanning thru the different responses on here and it seems as if I'm the only one so far that likes metal. But, that's ok. Each to his/her own. About the only kind of music I never got into is rap or hip-hop or whatever you call it. I like music for the music and by that I mean is that if I don't like the way the music sounds then I won't listen long enough to hear what the song is saying. Lyrics are secondary to me. I've always liked the sound of powerful drums and guitar distortion, the kind of sound you get from metal. To me, metal has more soul than any rap or r&b or any of that other music that is supposed to be "soulful." But, of course, metal has it's own kind of "soul." But, as far as the rap goes, the reason I don't like it is for precisely that reason...rapping. I would rather hear someone "scream" the words to a song even if I can't understand all of them than to hear someone rapping. To me, part of what makes a song pleasing to listen to is the singing....not what they are singing but how they are singing. And, to me, "rapping" is not singing. When someone sings they are complimenting the music and the music is complimenting their singing. In a way, a singer is creating a music all their own to go along with the music the rest of the band is playing. And I simply don't get that from rap. To me, rap is speed rhyming(in many cases) along with a redundant and often annoying "jungle beat"....in other words it's mindless dribble. But, like I said, to each his own.

I'm sorry, Arkanille. I was justly lightly scanning all the responses and never noticed the part where you said you like metal. I can appreciate just about all kinds of music...rock, alternative, r&b, country, classical(Bach, Mozart, etc.), even instrumental movie soundtracks but rap just isn't music to me. Sure, maybe not everyone can speed-rhyme(as I like to call it) like they do in most rap but where is the true feeling and creativity, the "soul" if you will? And, some if not all rap has bits and pieces of other songs in it. Makes me think too much of those so-called artists who have admitted to lip-syncing. I'm sure there will be someone who will respond to this discussion who is a big fan of rap and rake me over the coals for my opinion but, I just can't appreciate rap. It's just not music to me.

Yeah, there is a lot of music out there that might not be everyone's cup of tea, but there is a fanbase somewhere. Otherwise, wouldn't last that long, would it? I think there is a lot of music that I like that would make some people roll their eyes. I also want to point out the fact that even through the genres that I don't care for, there might be something that I enjoy, but I just have not heard it or got it in the right context. Maybe I never will but you just never know Thank you for your response, it is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

Hey, you're not alone here pal! I love metal. My favorite is progressive metal, but I listen to heavy metal/screamo too, often times. I agree with your view on rap too. Never liked it at all.

I've never been into rap either. Another type I just can't get into is 'screamo' or any heavy metal that sounds like the singer is literally vomiting. I don't mind music that's a little on the heavy side but the vomit sound is where I draw the line!

That sounds rather painful to listen to. Over the topic rather. Then again, there has to be an audience for this type of thing. Which is kind of terrifying to think about. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

I don't get rap a lot too. I don't understand the lyrics, I don't get the music. Though I do enjoy Eminem's music, lil wayne and bow wow. But when it comes to the new rap artitists, I just don't get it. MAybe because I enjoy listening to alternative music the most.

Yes, its just the lyrics tend to not connect with me for the most part. A shame but that's just the way it is. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

There's many kind of music I don't get. Like rock, metal... I only like music with soft, slow rhythm. Too fast, too loud, too heavy music has no difference of noise to me.

Music that is too loud can be annoying. I mean, I'm not really listening to what you're trying to say if you are being too loud. That's the way it works in real life and that's the way it works in music. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

In my case, it's specific to gangsta rap. I guess it's because I find hard to keep up with the words to give me that chance to appreciate it. However, I still like the more "mainstream" rap genre. I grew up in the 90's so I mostly listened to TLC, Aaliyah, The Fugees, etc.

Yes, although I think I am the wrong target audience for that group. In fact, I guess you could say that for a lot of the music. Oddly enough, while I did grow up in the 90s, I listened to a fair deal of music earlier. That's just what my parents had on and when I got a radio, my tastes had already been developed. Don't mind the 90s though, so I do get that music. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

Funk is one of those types of music that I don't like or hate. It just is something that I really never spent too much time thinking about to form an opinion on one way or another. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

Hi, megamatt. I would say that Beethoven music is something that I can't get. I can feel the sounds and vibrations but to understand what is being said I don't get. I have always had a knack for trying to decipher what was actually being said on this type of Orchestra.

Yeah that is an acquired taste to be sure. Any kind of Orchestra music is something that is either liked or disliked with no middle ground. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

I never really liked rap either, my sister loved it and played it all the time, it did my head in. I also don't get heavy metal, my ears don't really appreciate the screaming or am I just missing the lyrics here. I do prefere to listen to songs where the lyrics are quite clear, and generally make sense, so you can understand what the song author was thinking about when writing it.

In real life, when someone is screaming, I am not likely to be listening to what they say. You could really say the same thing for music all things considered. That loud screaming can really do a number on the eardrums. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

I'm really a music lover, but of all the genres of music, I never really got into heavy metal. I like rock just fine. But when I can't hear the lyrics anymore in heavy metal, I just don't appreciate the sound. I'm fine whatever the genre is, what's important to me is the lyrics.

I think if the music does not sound right, it will not be right to anyone. Regardless of how good it is. There have been some music in genres that I do like that are about as bad as the worst music imaginable in the genres that I do like. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

Heavy Metal/Screamo. I have tried so many times to understand how this is considered music.. And how people actually like it. I have tried listening to many screamo heavy metal songs and just can't get threw even one song. I'm not into that kind of music at all. I've tried to understand it because all the local bands are that type, but now I'm thinking maybe thats WHY they're local bands.

A lot of those bands will always be a niche market at best, even the higher ones I will think. Perhaps it will take off one day. Who really knows. Music tends to be something that can change at the blink of an eye. It doesn't seem like something that I can listen to for more than a short time. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.
