Is Talking to Yourself a Sign of You Going Crazy?

I was having this road block with my current program, I was really hopeless on finding a way to debug it and I was concentrating hard in front of the PC I suddenly spoke out loud.. "what the hell are you doing?! you're suppose to put it this way!" I didn't notice that my boss was actually just behind me and watching me suffer with the current situation (I actually jumped when he said..) "talking to yourself is a sign that you're going crazy" I told him that if he didn't assign me to such a difficult assignment then I wont have to go crazy... and curiously asked him if staying up at night, lying down on your bed and thinking loads of stuff and questioning yourself various questions that just pop out of your head counts as a sign of talking to yourself? He just laugh and pet me in the head. Is it true that talking to yourself is a sign that.. well, let's say that you're NOT actually GOing crazy but you have a POTENTIAL to go crazy?

I think it is a sign of going crazy or you are on your way to it. Too much stress probably...or you are one intelligent human being. You can't stop processing information that you might be breaking down...like a pc! Anyway, if you continue to think of solutions that aren't there or figuring it out yourself then you have the potentials of going crazy.

This is the normal reaction of a programmer. Especially, if the codes doesn't work. Being part of this field is very stressful...

Yes, stress makes people crazy but it's just mild. It's not going to cause immediate schizophrenia or any other mental diseases. But you may be right that there is a risk of insanity if she kept herself too stressed. I think all types of work is stressful if not handled properly. Try taking in some fresh air once in a while and don't panic or think negatively. I had programming before and even though it was simple, I made a mistake that took me hours to look around for it. I cried and ate alot because of stress so loosen up and divert your attention for awhile. Sometimes the saying "the more you look for something the harder to search for it" is true. Oh, so her work is IT. I didn't realize that. lol. I take up accounting and auditing, just like looking for the wrong code is hard, it's looking up what went wrong in the transactions. Very stressful. Fortunately we are not taking it up yet, I just tried studying in advanced and I'm hardly able to manage myself.

@masmelger: WAAAHhhh... you made me worry again... T_T Does this has a real scientific explanation? maybe I should research about it now! but... I'm one intelligent being.. lol! if I am that kind of person I wouldn't have problem with my assigned work... I wish I am one though! ^.^ thanks for the response! @adel: thanks for understanding the jobs of programmers like me... it is indeed so stressful and really disappointing when you don't get the result you expect. ^.^ and should I mention about deadlines? WAAHhh! Crazy!! ^.^ @oxyde_gyabo: Yes, I'm handling codes and it's frustrating whenever your codes need to be debugged... much more if you are debugging other persons codes that's really one heck of tough work! I do take time out once in a while. like what i'm doing right now... myLot helps me unwind. I see that you're taking up accounting? My Fave subject! I love it when every sheet I did gets balance on first try! lol! but it get to be longer.. and longer doesn't it? good luck to your studies!

Actually, I do the same thing always. I am not aware that I've already talking out loud to myself as I just thinking why the output is not that as you want to be. Maybe, this is the normal respond of mind and body to relieve the stress that we have at work. I admit that working in an IT company is very stressful.

If talking to yourself is a sign of insanity, Lock me away. I have done it since I was a child. I see nothing wrong with talking to yourself. Sometimes I think i am the only one who listens to me. If that's crazy, I welcome it with open arms!

Lol! you don't have to feel that way.. look at all the response!! I myself is soooo relieved too. Maybe we do that kind of reaction when we feel that way.. Come to think of it I do talk to myself (although mentally) whenever I feel lonely. why do you feel that nobody is listening to you? that's not true.. maybe most of your people just don't understand you, everybody is special in so many different ways, and I see that, that doesn't bother you... keep up the good work! as long as you don't harm anyone your still on the right track! thanks for the response!

Everybody talks to himself at times. However, if you talk to yourself non-stop, as if you're chatting with someone, you've got a problem.

Thanks for dissecting my response and analysing it. Regarding talking mentally, isn't that the way we think? I mean, whenever we think, we're talking to ourselves mentally.

Disagree on your first line, because there are people who doesn't talk to themselves. (just kidding, I just want to be sarcastic..) One sometimes talks to themselves even in their mind like for example "I'm hungry, what should I eat for today.." or "OMG, I slept in, You're late for school.." something like that. Even when you don't say it, you talk to yourself mentally. I agree on your second line because it sounds like a familiar story.

You're welcome. Yea, that means talking our minds out is talking to ourselves so basically that wouldn't mean we're insane because it's normal to think like were talking to ourselves.

For me its not a crazy thing wherein you talk to yourself or thinking out loud. I find myself on that situation whenever I'm focused on what I'm doing and saying something instructional words for me to guide myself. And if ever I made a mistake, I also tell myself not to do that and instead do this. But of course I murmur and not talk out load. I guess its an additional effort for me to focus.

yes, I think you're right. somehow, that helps me wake up.. talking to myself. it's just like.. "Hey! you're loosing it now!" then I would go back to reality and that helps me focus too! I think my boss got me there... come to think of it, he has this habit of playing around with us.. you know.. suddenly breaking a joke when all of us are deeply indulging the programming torture! lol! thanks for the response!

NO,my friend! it's just on your head and thinking! i think you just got carried away from such situation that let you shout out loud when it was really just a thought inside of you.sometimes we just have to let it out for us not to bother something inside of us.yeah,it sounds like crazy but you know for yourself that you are not getting crazy.just let things come smoothly.don't let it bug you for log time.it might lead to craziness if you are too much thinking of those things.just take it smoothly...

No. I also talk to my self. I work in acctg dept, and all of us talk to our self especially when we are anylizing something. It helps when Im talking to myself, it gives me answer sometimes, or it lift me up that I can do this. Everybody has a potential going crazy, because where human. I may also get crazy if I don't talk to myself, because it don't release whats in my mind.

I think she's funny... sorry! ^.^ maybe, this is just we need a time out with our work and sometimes we forgot, that's why we are talking to ourselves unconsciously. thanks for the response!

No, you were stressed and busy that's why you talked to yourself. I also talk to myself on impulse and sometimes hit myself or slap a table if I'm really having a hard time. It's okay to talk to yourself but you should try relaxing and relieve yourself from stress once in a while. As for other circumstances of talking to oneself, there are times when a person is alone for quite some time or very bored and unsociable that the person talks alone in a second person perspective. It's not going crazy ok ^_^ chill out with friends and family sometimes to straighten out twisted nerves if you find stress being a source of insanity.

I do that almost all the time, well i think as long as you keep it in your mind and don't talk with yourself outside your mind, then it's fine, if you talk with yourself outside your mind people will start to think that you're really crazy. and about your job and boss, just relax! world ain't going to an end just because you cannot debug something ;) i'm a online game programmer so i can understand your feeling though.

I think my boss just did that for me to take my mind of my work for a while, he use to joke around most of the time as an icebreaker. It's nice to know that we're on the same field! ^.^ I'm on gaming too, although I handle iPhone games. thanks for the response! ^.^

I also talk to myself sometimes specially when i knew i just made a mistake. I don't think it's crazy or is gonna make you crazy, it has actually helped me cope up with the stress of pressures at work. Talking to myself also usually gives me that realization of the things needed to be done. I'm one forgetful person and saying some things to myself prior makes me remember easier at times. Just don't say it that loud that others can hear you. lol...

Yes, some mentally-challenged people may talk to themselves. But then you can see the difference. These people are not aware that they are talking to themselves. They are really talking to somebody else that they perceive as real. Normal people also talk to themselves. I talk to myself MOST OF THE time. It is embarrassing though when someone catches you talking to yourself. But yes, it is normal to talk to ourselves. So stop worrying otherwise it will realy drive you nuts!

It is not that means your brain is just active. It is the reaction when our brain has so many things to do and that means brain is still at work even you were lying in your bed and sometime on my own opinion I do that to and when I think of something I write it down and making new Ideas that's the problem when the brain is really active they thought that you are going crazy but its not its just that by means that your adrenalin is really high and that's the truth why sometimes you talk to yourself and being crazy is different from having Ideas or questions in your mind.

Well, i used to talk to myself a lot..wahahah But, lately i haven't been doing that because two nights ago there was a voice inside of me, I'm gonna call it my intuition and told me to be silent and breath deeply. As i did that, i started to notice that things began to be more clear to me and i was just continuing to be silent for the rest of the night and not only that i also noticed hat i enjoyed the music that i was listening to even more than i used to before because i was actually listening to the song and no talking to myself and saying how good the song was. Everyone is different, so i don't think that just because you talk to talk to yourself, you're crazy, everyone does it from time to time i believe. I amazing i might add, lol. When I'm quiet and doing my any task it's easier for me to focus and if something bothers me, i just take some breaths and the anger passes away. So in conclusion, it's normal to talk to yourself, if u enjoy it.
