Mosquito Bites! Advice?

Canada
July 16, 2010 9:47am CST
I am from Scotland and just moved to Canada, here is the thing --- in Scotland we don't have mosquito! Out here I am getting eaten alive, does anybody have any family secrets or advice on how to make myself less tasty to them, and how to prevent being bitten, and what to put on my bites once I have been bitten? Right now I look like a cage fighter as I think I am allergic to the bites!

Hey, I know how you feel!! In a group of 100 people, the mossies will come for me..always!! So, there are a few things you can do: sleep with a fan on in your room, with the blower pointing just above your face. The mossies are so light, the wind will blow them away! Also, dont leave your lights on in your room before you go to bed..switch everything off and hour or so before you go to sleep. Wear light clothing, apparently that also deters them. Drink tonic water, yep, with gin if you wish, that gives them a huge hangover:) Last but not least, burn citronella candles. They smell like lemon and mossies dont like that either! In fact, if you have stray cats messing in your home, just dilute citronella oil with some water and spray it where the cats have messed...cats..gone...mossies...gone! I am a bit of a lunatic with mossie bites: I scratch them until they bleed then I spray deodorant on them...burns like hell but dries it up and the itch is gone!

If you get bit and want it to stop itching for a while- Use your nail and put an X through it.(You have to push hard). This isn't a joke, even tho it might sound like one. I do it all the time and it works for me.

In our place we have mosquito coils - we have to burn this for at least one hour and find that all the mosquitoes are driven away. I am unable to advice you weather this coil is available in Canada.

vinegar works ok but you'd have to keep spraying yourself at least once an hour and a paste of baking soda should take the itch out of the bites

Taking extra vitamin B seems to keep mosquitos from biting you. Another thing that works well is to use Skin So Soft lotion by Avon. It is easy to order Avon online and have it delivered to your house. The vitamin B really works. If you do get bitten and they (the bites) swell, the best thing that I have found to use is Benadryl spray. It really helps to keep you from scratching the itchy bites. Try to avoid going out at dusk unless you use a product to keep you from getting bit. Do try these methods because I have been successful with them. I live in NJ and in the humid summer months, it can be horrible. I am very sensitive to the bites but these home cures have worked well for me. Also if you are sweaty you will attract the mosquitos so shower a lot.

Hi there, First of all, welcome to Canada. Yes, depending where you live, mosquitoes are nasty but they don't hurt anyone. If you like to walk outside in the forest, well use some creams or sprays and you can wear light color clothes. I think if you put one perfume, they will be attracted, so don't do so. You can buys some special stuff that you can burn outside, I forgot the name, but you can find that at Canadian Tire, if there is one near your city. With your clothes, don't forget to cover every inches of skin, however, they are able to bit on a jeans or shirt. Also, try to not move your hands and arms too much to try to scare them, they will come back fast. They don't like smoke, so if you do a fire outside, stay close of the fire, you won't get bit. There are no secret family recipe that I know of, but just some easy solutions like sprays, light color clothes, cover the skin properly. As for bites, don't rub them too much and you can buy something at the pharmacy if you are allergic and need a cream. Don't worry, they are harmless.

Insect repellent lotion is one of the good prevention products you can use. another thing is to keep your backyard or front yard for that matter as dry as possible since mosquitoes reproduce on stagnant water. and also trying keeping your surroundings clean as possible... water basins should be covered and the water within should be changed at least once every two days. Hope this helps... Cheers!

Hi, I had a friend who, every time he went fishing, would put some Avon Skin so Soft splash (not the lotion but the other liquid, I forget what it's called but it's a not a lotion) on his skin and he said it worked. It's never worked very well for me, although a lot of people like it. I also read once that if you want to help keep mosquitoes at bay while you're outside, aside from the regular mosquito spray, try putting some sheets of fabric softener in your pockets or on your person. When I have to make photos outside in the afternoon that actually does seem to help a bit, although it might look kind of ridiculous. Good luck. Those silly things swarm around me as well and I'm always looking for something to get rid of them totally.

I don't think we human beings could win the war against the mosquitoes. You could kill some mosquitoes in several hours, but during the same time many more mosquitoes are born in the world. When you are bitten by mosquitoes, you'd better put toilet water on your skin, which could make you feel better.

here in the philippines, we get mosquitoes everywhere. the trick is to put mosquito nets installed on your bed at night when you sleep, and fine mesh screen on your windows. and but some mosquito creams and repellents, that should keep most of the little buggers away. and we also use mosquito coils, but it can be irritating for some because, well, it's basically smoke. lol. creams should do it for you then. goodluck :)

In our country we used to bought mosquito coils and mosquito nets to stay away from mosquito insects. We have to be careful with these insects because they have the ability to give you illness like dengue and malaria.

Try to put screen on your windows and I don't know if you can buy things like mosquito net in your country. Some say the peelings of citrus fruits can repel insects, if you have them, try squeezing the peelings onto your skin. Balm or ointments ( I know only Chinese brands ) are quite effective, they can soothe the itchiness and soreness of mosquito bites.
