Very poor handwriting

India
July 19, 2010 6:21am CST
Friends today I had been to the bank near my home to make some fixed deposits. They gave me receipt against this, but the name etc was filled up manually by a bank staff. I was really sad to see that the writing was almost illegible. The hand writing of this man was so bad. In my opinion they should recruit employees that have good handwriting. Also they can hire persons, who have beautiful handwriting for filling up such certificates. I am proud to tell I have very good handwriting. The credit goes to my primary school teacher, who was very rigid about nice handwriting. I always write my research papers etc in pen and papers, this makes my writing cute. What about you, do you write letters, diary etc daily to maintain good handwriting? Please also comment on the story about the bank staff. Thanks in advance. Professor

My handwriting is not so good, but if I worked in a job where I had to write something out for a customer, I would make sure that I write it legibly.

hello Prof, I am proud to say i have a very good handwriting. I guess some were gifted with good handwriting and some attained from constant practice and determination. I can say,i am born with this gift, ever since i started my alphabets,i really can write good, well and very neat. Regarding the bank staff,i think you were right. They can assigned someone to write or fill up the form with someone who can write in good and neat way,so people can read it easily and understand what is written. Have a good day always

I used to categorically refuse to correct the papers of my students if and when I saw bad handwriting.THat is the importance I give to handwriting. My handwriting is supposed to be very good in both English and Tamil. Now I am middleaged and I use the computer to a great extent but still my handwriting is good and I intend writing something or the other just to maintain my writing.

Regarding the sataff it is obvious that this isn't a criteria in the selection process. But, with computer usage being excessive the recruitment panel may not give as much importance to this handwriting as you may want them to.

Hello Paps! I am not bragging but I do have a nice hand writing too. And i can do different kinds, I have a hand writing guide at home. That is why when I am doing scrap book I like to play with my writing. About hiring people with poor hand writing, I have to believe that it is right. Although some are illiterate to write, writing is important and very important is to understand what you had written. It can lead to future problems if you will not take action on this.

That is really a disappointing situation when some employees of banks and other institution dealing with writing documents have hard to read writing. I admire people who can write clearly and neatly specially in important documents. Congratulations that you had it. I can write nicely also sometimes.. and I credit that too to my teachers not in elem but high school because they let me write their lessons on the board which give me a challenge to improve my writing hahaha...

Hi Professor~ You are right that those in the positions where they must still handwrite certain certificate should at least have proper legible handwriting. It is sad that those growing up today probably don't do much writing except to sign their name now and then! Unfortunately, I must admit that although when I was in school it was important to learn handwritting and be good at it my teachers must not have cared because my handwritting is totally illegible and even I can't read what I wrote! My printing isn't much better. So obviously when I was learning how to write no one much cared how bad I was at it! It was lucky for me when I learned to type on typewritters because I no longer had to handwrite anymore!

Whereas in today's society there are a lot of people that will simply do all of their writing by typing on the computer, I very much prefer to handwrite those things that I am writing first and then transfer it to the computer. When I was in school I didn't get good marks in handwriting because of the fact that I am left handed, but as I got older, I think that my handwriting turned out to be very nice. I'm often complimented on it even though it does slant backwards for most people.

I guess nowadays it is not so good to discriminate people in hiring for new jobs if they got poor handwriting skills. Specially now that everything is done by computers through a keyboard, or through a voice recognition software. Maybe in a few years, the art of writing with pen and paper will go away. Hopefully not in my lifetime. I also have good handwriting skills, I think. I also went through good training in my primary school days. Credit to my teachers back then, when we had writing workbooks where we had to repeat sentences over and over until we got our penmanship right.

When i was a school child and a teacher i had a wonderful handwriting. Now a days I seldom write. so my hand writing is getting worse. Most of the time i write for me. Whenever i write for me i write very badly. Whenever i write for others i try my level best to write it legible.

I used to draw and stuff. Lettering. Now, my hands have evolved from artiste to for-computer-keyboards-and-mouse only. :) So, my handwriting is pretty bad. Well, it was bad before - it's worse now. hehe.

I myself have terrible handwriting, so I must disagree. Having excellent handwriting should not contribute to being hired to a job that isn't 100% about handwriting. However, I firmly believe that everything in this day and age, especially done by a corporation, should be typed out and printed to look as professional as possible.

Good morning Professor. Penmanship is not taught in the schools any more. As long as the teachers can make out what is being written that is all that counts. My granddaughter was a very messy writer and her teacher complained about it she didn't want to help correct it. I suggested that if her papers were messy I would make her rewrite and the teacher could just look at it and tell her if it was expectable or not. she didn't need to correct it just tell the granddaughter if it looked good but the teacher said she didn't have time. The computer is used so much now that learning good handwriting is not considered as important as it used to be. Also printing is now the thing to do.

hi professor My own handwriting is not so good, it was good as a child as w e had a very strict teacher who called it penmanship. Now days we just do not do much handwriting and most are emails so its just a matter of typing in things. I think if there is an need for handwriting in a bank this should be done by people who do have beautiful handwriting. My bank uses automatic typing instead so all is very easy to read.,The typing does away with people with bad handwriting. I always wonder at my doctor's scribble when he makes out a prescription for me, how does the pharmacist know what he wrote?

I agree with you that employees that are required to use pen in filling up should have a good handwriting. It is difficult to have accurate data and often people would get wrong information because of that. I am also proud that I possess a very good handwriting, i love writing notes and I think it had help me a lot to have a good handwriting.
