Hi, Several years ago we had a male parakeet. He was the cutest bird ever. I really miss him a lot. Back then I was often home alone with the parakeet as my only companion. He and I became great friends and he talked up a storm! He said and did the most hilarious things! One of the funniest things he ever said to me happened one day just after I fed him. He looked me straight in the eye and said loudly, "Be a bird!" I laughed and laughed. He would come out with phrases like that right out of the blue all the time. Things that no one ever taught him. What strange or funny things has your parakeet said or done?

None of my guys speak (I have 3 parakeets), but the most amusing things they do tend to involve bathing. Rem, an all-white female, flew over to be misted the other day while I was misting one of the cockatiels. She landed on the boing rope perch, fluffed up, and started rubbing all over the rope, even trying to crawl under Felix (the tiel). She's a bossy little bird, but silly, too. :)

It's so true, many people don't even realize just how smart so many birds (and other pets) are. Have you ever seen the videos of Victor the parakeet on Youtube? The stories of your little guy made me think of Victor and the things he would say: http://www.youtube.com/user/RyanRey2000 if you want to check them out. He was quite the serious talker!

Oh wow, sounds like he was quite the amazing little guy! I don't know of many parakeets who speak clearly, you had a very special little bird who obviously relished interacting with you and your family. :)

No, I hadn't seen Victor on Youtube. Really cute. My guy spoke clear as a bell, though. No interpretation needed. lol He didn't chatter incessantly like Victor. He only spoke when he had something definite to say,(which was often). : ) I think someone had said the word Ezekiel once about a week before this when my son had a paper to write with Ezekiel in it. I had come in from grocery shopping and he greeted me with, "Ezekiel chirp, Zekey be a bird." It was hilarious that he gave Ezekiel a nickname never mind that he said Ezekiel in the first place! (clear as a bell) He used to actually SAY chirp. (soooo funny!) He did chirp like a bird too, though : ) He would recognize the sound of OUR car when it drove up. Then he'd whistle at the top of his voice and make a racket hoping we would hear him from outside the house (which we did). Any other car could drive up and he wouldn't make a sound.

I've always been a dog & cat person, so I've never had a parakeet. I had a friend who had a parakeet & when he had a party, he'd put a hen egg in the cage & tell everybody his parakeet had laid it just a few hours before. You'd be surprised how many people would take him seriously!!!

That's really funny, Marissa. : ) It would have to be a really big parakeet to lay a hen's egg! lol We had my parakeet about 7 or 8 years and he was an absolute character that thought he was human but wanted people to "Be a bird." He said that quite often among many other things. Sometimes he would pick up swear words and of course say them at the top of his tiny lungs!
