Do you know the greatest fear is...

I went for a talk during the weekend and I was enlightened on something. The top three fears that people have are (in order): 1. Public Speaking 2. Getting Married 3. Death For me, public speaking is quite a challenge. I do pretty well in small groups but when I have to speak out officially, my legs would turn to jelly and my hands would turn ice cold. Is this applicable to you? What's your greatest fear?

Hi bluemoonpavilion! Thought that's a great talk to attend to, to identify and perhaps to face our fears. I know that I would be worrying alot if my turn to present something at work would be due soon. Like always I would spend time worrying about this fear instead of the topic I should be concentrating on. It's good to identify our fears, face them and move on. I still turn white though and I'm still learning.

This public speaking will really freak people out. I think it's because we are not used to having so many pairs of eyes focusing on us, observing our every expression and every move. Also sometimes we do not feel confident about the topic we are presenting and that contributes to some of the fear.

Agree with what you said. Public speaking is not everyone's forte. It helps a bit though for those who do it regularly but not for most a layman like me. Been hearing about talks around here too. Interesting topic the least. And thanks!

Forgot to add that there are actually a lot of good quality talks in Singapore, many famous people from all over the world come here to deliver their ideas and many are for free or charge just a small fee. I think many organizations are doing a good job for organizing events like this.

My greatest fear is to speak in front of everybody for I fear that they are smarter than me or more educated than me and powerful businessperson they can chat confidently. It boils me down and my toes is shaking but once I told myself that they are no smarter blah blah! I just said to myself nobody gets to the top alone. And confidently maybe I have it all to captured the hearts and conquered the mind of hundred people and they are just only human being like me. why should I be afraid. I just did what I have to do and the best thing is nobody disagree that time and its flatters me I overcome everything.

If you have the conviction for a certain topic I'm sure you can overcome all that fear and speak well. Sometimes this attitude of "mind over matter" does work, and once you start the words flowing, the rest of it would be easier. Next time you will perform even better with the prior experience.

hi bluemoonpavilion yes public speaking is my worst fear, a small group not too bad but anything else I get so frantic and my legs want to buckle and my hands are sweaty and my throat starts to dry up, and just croak out words. no c annot do it, just cannot do it at all. I will do anything to avoid having to speak all alone in front of a bunch of people.Getting married was no big deal either.

Hi Hatley, I know that feeling, the same thing happens to me everytime I have to speak out at some function, even if it's to direct questions at a speaker on stage. I know this fear is somehow irrational but it is a natural reaction of the body.

I have many fears; to become blind, to become deaf and mute, to become immobile, to become crazy, to die and not be able to love again.

It's surprising to know how many of us fear the same thing.

Yeah, i know that. Someone told me that, my teacher I think. Lack of confidence has become a great fear.

Yes, lack of confidence seems to be the original sin here. I guess it could be built up through lots of practice.

Mine would be public speaking. I really hate speaking in front of an audience, even if I am just infront of my parents or other people I know; the number would not make a difference. I could speak infront of an audience or two and still stutter.

I suppose this fear comes from us being too conscious of ourselves and wanting to present ourselves in the best light. We get worried how we look or sound like to an audience be they two or twenty.

Now that you mentioned this, I'm scared too. I remember when I had a fracture in my foot and I was in crutches, I was so helpless and had to rely everything on my family, even doing a simple task like getting a cup of water because I need both hands to hold the crutches and I sort of hop around, so it's impossible to keep water intact in the cup if I carry it around.
