Oil as a butter substitute in baking?

I want to try this shortbread recipe I saw online, but the thing is I'm low on butter. I was wondering if canola oil can be used as a substitute. If yes, would it make any difference with the final product?

If you used oil it just wouldn't be shortbread, the 'shortness' of the biscuit comes from the butter (or margarine) that you use. My favourite old shortbread recipe is the 2, 4, 6 method - that's 2oz sugar, 4oz butter or marge and 6oz plain flour

Wow! That's really helpful. I just didn't want to go and risk spoiling good ingredients for nothing. I'll definitely try your measurements. Very easy to remember too!
