Relax or Learn (On Vacations)

When you go on vacation do you go to places where you can relax, or do you go to places where you can learn? Do you try to find places where you can do a little bit of both? I've ever only been on vacation twice in my life. The only other times I've gone anywhere were day trips. I've only stayed in a hotel once in my life. I like the prospect of learning about places I visit, but I wouldn't make it most of the trip, I would just make it a part of it, and I'd make sure it was fun to learn whatever it is. I'm interested in history, I am sure if any of my history teachers could hear that they would be wondering who the heck I was, and why I didn't love to learn history back when I was in school. I love to see old buildings, and learn about when they were built and what they were used for.

Hi SomeCowgirl! I normally draw the line between the two extremes of relax and learn. And that would somehow influence my choice of the places I want to visit. But having said that, I still enjoy a little learning in places I go to relax and also enjoy a certain amount of relaxation in places I visit to learn. Between them I don't think we can actually detach one from the other but it pays to know what we look out for to maximize our time.

Of course wherever you go your going to learn something. When on vacation I still like the prospect of learning, but I'd like to choose what it is I learn. There are so many tourist attractions around the world, and so much to learn about the history of the places we visit. To me that seems more fun as you get to say walk in an Old Church and be told about who famous in history has stepped foot in the very same church.

When I go for vacations I like to visit interestng places, shopping and relaxing or detoxing myself. I just want the feel of a new place away from the monotonous life back home. I am now on a three months vacation in Australia and New Zealand. I like traveling and this is only my 2nd vacation for this year.

I am very envious. We couldn't afford to go on vacation more then once a year, and as is my husband wouldn't be able to get off. To such exotic places as well (exotic to me that is). I am glad to see you on mylot, though you're also on vacation. Hope your enjoying the experience, will you be uploading photos to mylot of the places you've been? I'd love to see them.

I prefer to visit places where I can learn something. I am interested in art, architechture, history, different cultures etc, and I love visiting museums and beautiful/intereresting/old buidings. Before I visit a new place I always read about it and plan with places to visit. I like to visit the famous sights as well some of the unknown places. I like to visit big cities, villages in countryside, islands etc. I love walking around in a new places, and I love visiting countires that are different from my own. I also like to go shopping or relax at one of the local coffeeshops or restaurants.

I love visiting old buildings and learning about it's history, even if it was just the home to a small town man. I especially love buildings built back in the 1800's. That's pretty much all i am interested in, though art and the artist's perspective does interest me. Of course shopping is another cool thing about new and different places too.

I go for relaxation mainly. But after a few days i marl all the important places to view either with a historical background like palaces, forts religious places etc.I'd like to see places of scenic beauty followed by historical monuments. It doesn't matter what your school teachers think. These are the lessons we learn in life bu touring, exploring and finding out for ourselves.

I prefer a vacation where I can relax but learning can't be helped especially go to a new place. You learn the people, culture and place.

Your right Learning can't be helped, whether on or off of a vacation you learn every day. Though it's intriguing to learn about new things, especially if it's pertaining to an area your vacationing at.

I like to learn about places, so as long as it doesn't bore me I will be alright. Some things are interesting to learn about like specific buildings and things like that. I wouldn't want to go to a type of school on any kind of vacation, what I talk of are tourist attractions etc. Well I am glad you enjoy doing those things on vacation, I like to play video games myself, and I also love to hang out with my husband.

Well... long, long time ago, I used to travel a lot. My main goals were having fun. However I was very interested in learning so I always combined both. I am from Europe and traveled extensively in places where history was alive, and one couldn't help but absorb it. I loved it and will always remember what I saw and learned. Now... I'm sure that there is a lot that I would love to learn, but I prefer to go on a vacation to relax, purely. And when I mean relax I don't mean going shopping, dinning in big restaurants, be around people and noise. I mean a nice place near the beach or around water somehow, calm and quiet... a relax paradise for me :) Like you I wasn't too keen on history at some point in school, things seemed boring and old fashioned and there was so much to learn that I wasn't really interested into. But I loved to travel with my parents and learn just form looking around me. So many museums, art galleries, castles and churches. So many villages where people seemed to have stayed still in time. Once I hit 16 and started traveling on my on I was so used to look for those gems that I did it even without noticing. And that's when history started to make sense. My marks really started to improve then LOL Still...now... the choice really is relax over learning, even though one can learn no matter where just by observing:)

When I go off traveling I like to have an adventure and do lots of exploring. I tend to stay at a locally owned guest house or unusual accommodation. I usually fly into a gateway and then travel around a particular region by train, bus or ferry. I like to learn for 80% of the time and relax for 20% of the time that I am awake. I sleep in the night and explore in the daytime. I find it interesting to chat to the local people and find out about their culture. I am fascinated when I visit historical sites. I enjoy looking at different architecture. I loved history lessons when I was at school. It is nicer to explore the historical places than just see them in a book.

I actually like to do a little of both. Although I haven't really had a vacation in many years, I like to visit historical places, such as old forts or places like that. I like learning about the history of our country, and it is nice to be able to relax a little while doing it...

Little of both. If you like old buildings, you will love Europe. Something to look forward to when you are old and rich. :D

When I go on vacation, I do prefer relaxing. However, as much as I enjoy relaxing on vacation, I do also sometimes learning something about where I am. I don't mind learning a thing or two when I'm on holiday.

Holidaying is my passion and I have gone on several packages as I feel doing it on our own has many hassles which the tour conductors take care. I like sight seeing, meeting people of the country where I would be going, and experiencing the place in every possible way. I will however never return without buying chocolates from whichever country I visit. The best chocolates I got were from Germany and Australia although it is claimed swiss chocolates are the best. While Swiss chocolates are available in India those from other countries are rare. Switzerland was the best in terms of the scenic beauty the travel to Jung Frau (Alps) is one place I can never forget. I can go on and on writing about the several places I have visited but suffice it to say that I make the best of what I can get for the time I spend there.

It was in the year 2205 when I had my last vacation; it was a family reunion and of course what I did was talking to my relatives the first three days and the next four days, I went to the beach and felt relieved from blabbing. I just stayed there inside the hut and sleep enjoying the soothing breeze. My children never disturbed me and even waited for me to wake up. We proceed to some places wherein there's a museum and we enjoyed the historical facts about our province. I hope everybody is familiar with the province of Cebu, Philippines.

I'd like to do both, relax and learn about the culture of the place that I am visiting. I am planning to take a vacation next year and hopefully my funds will be able to take me somewhere I have never gone to. I really want to go and visit Europe and I am hoping that this dream or wish materializes.

Sometimes I go to relax and sometimes to learn. I go to the same place to relax and that way I don't have a need to learn anything. Then other times I go to learn. And still other times I go to do both. It depends on the mood I am in and what I feel able to do at the time. Energy level and all.

I would definitely go for relaxation. Just stay in bed, or in the beach and have nothing to do all day. Hehehe. I like history, although I am not that really into it, although when on vacation, I still try to alot a day to tour the historical areas of the place that I will be going to.. But majority of my vacation would be for relaxation and maybe eating, or eating a lot. heheheheh..

Mostly I go to places where I can relax. It would also be fun if I have to do both things at the same time. Well, I kinda did that last month when my husband and I went somewhere to relax and then we ended learning cause we found out so many interesting things in that place where we went.
