How fast do you go through books?

I haven't read a book in months. I love to read.. but books are expensive and I don't get to the library often and even then I don't find many of their hardcovers are convenient books for me to carry around. So, I heard about harlequin books offering a "deal". ok not really a deal but something I could do.. They would send you free books periodically and in exchange you answer a survey regarding them.. Cool, I thought. A couple months went by but I finally got an email telling me a couple of books were on the way. I got them.... and read them both in within 24 hours. The first book was done within 3-4 hours. I even took a nap in the middle of reading it to try and prolong the pleasure of reading.. LOL.. Now I remember why I don't buy books very often... I would be broke!

I have read three books this week, one each for the last three days. I get a lot of free books on my Kindle and can't keep up with all of them. I will never finish reading all the books I have before I die. My house is full of books I want to read. I got most of them at thrift shops for less than a dollar. Others I got free. Some are inventory I didn't sell. When you live in an online bookstore you never run out.

Wow, that is impressive and you still have the time to myLot?! :) I hear you on the book things I was buying them off craigslist to resell on ebay, so I have a bunch too. my problem is I'm picky with the genres I like.. I'm not real varied.

@bagarad :) very cool. I read a lot of Nora Roberts. so she has Mysteries, magical stuff and I like all the different stories. I love that most are trilogies. then she has the futuristic stuff as JP ROBB.. but I also enjoy Lynn Kurland and she has books that are romance but with a time travel twist and I don't mind those historical romances in 17th century France and England etc. and once in awhile we pop back to present day.. makes it fun. I love nature books, Wolves, horses cats and dogs, Gardening is awesome too. I've read only a couple sci-fi books

@minx267 I like a wide variety, from memoirs and inspirational fiction to mysteries and books about nature and gardening. Two bad you don't live closer. I'd send you some of the ones I've finished.

I typically finish 2-3 books in a week. I'm a bit of a mad-crazy reader. I have absolutely no problem with carrying around big hardcover books. In fact, I PREFER carrying a big thick hardcover book over some wimpy paperback. (No matter what 8 pound textbooks I also have to carry with me!0 I won't choose a paperback if I have the option and the money for a hardcover. I also prefer buying books as opposed to borrowing them from the library. I think authors and publishers should be fed. Of course, I'm a poor college student so I can't always afford to buy books. (I will choose books over movies, musics, and sometimes even food though. lol) But I can't stop reading. If I don't have a book to read then I feel lost.

Wow, you got it bad! lol I found that hardcovers are so hard to curl up in bed with. I like the smaller version that you can hold in one hand while laying on your side.. dozing off... lol

Yes, I do have it bad. But it's an affliction that I don't want to have cured. I absolutely love to read! I prefer hardcovers because they're durable. They last MUCH longer, they don't get broken and wrinkly spines, and they don't do that awful front cover curl up thing. Plus you can hit stupid people with them! I also think they're more fun to read. I can hold a hardcover open in one hand (standing up on a moving train while hanging on for dear life with the other hand). I can understand why people like paperbacks. Personally, the most important thing to me is the story. I just really like enjoying the story in hardcover.

I go through a book, most often audio books, every day or two days because I have no cable TV anymore. My library has a free digital download system that we can use, as long as we have current library card. It's a boon.

There's always yard sales and second-hand stores, though even there (the stores) they can be a bit much, such as Value Village's policy of charging half the cover price... some books have a cover price of over $20.

It seems even thrift shop prices have done up. My favorite thrift shop used to charge .50 for hardcovers and .25 for paperbacks. Now they charge $1-2 for hardcovers, .50 for trade paper, and .25 for mass market paperbacks. I don't buy those books anymore. I don't need to. I have enough on hand to last a lifetime.

What??? Are you serious?? Do you get to pick the genre? If so I want to know more because like you, I rarely buy books because I can't afford to, but love to read. And what is the survey on, the book itself? I would love to give my opinion on books I read as well..Please tell me more..

I went there and tried to sign up..It said they they are only using present members at this time..:( I also prefer the suspense in my romance, but can read just romance too. If you don't mind a little inspirational also mixed in with it, then you might like the story I am working on and trying to get published. It has all three, inspirational/suspense/romance..:)

This is through harlequin.. so they are romances.. I don't get to pick anything.. I haven't done the survey yet, but yes I assume it will be on the books, maybe asking opinion on what I thought of them. I'll get back to you on that. If you like harlequin romances, it's a good gig. the books came completely plain. White cover with only a title and author. No pictures, no synopsis on the back. So it was for me interesting as I rarely dive into a book without knowing where it's headed. I can't remember where I found the link to get there, but it is tellharlequin.com Maybe you can go and invite yourself. :-) It was a few months between my first survey and when they sent me another and said . okay we are going to send you books now.. But since I haven't read a book in months it was worth it. :-) I just wish they were bigger.

Oh, I envy you the time (although if I stay off the computer I can make it..) To read a book a day. I have always loved to read.. and quite honestly don't get people who aren't able to lose themselves in a book. I really should go back to my library and see what they got. it's been a few years since I went there. Although, I doubt much has changed.. But I do exchange books with my friends too.

I love reading books and I read them as often as I can. I like to read a few books a week. I used to read two or three or more a day. But now I have internet so that cuts into my reading some but that just makes the books last longer so I can have something to read when I need it. Yeah, they can be very expensive but they are sites out there that you can swap books for free and eBay has some good deals on books sometimes I get mine from there or friends and family and occasionally I get to the library for some. It is awesome that you get to take a survey on them..sounds like a great deal.

That depends on the book and my self control! I borrowed "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and finished it in 2 days, which would be on the slow side for Me..To keep myself going,I have a shelf of favourite books I've bought that I'll go back to and re-read when I have nothing else to do..I'm a member of a Local library, but rarely go there as they don't have a big selection, and I usually hang on to books until I forget to return them, and then I have to pay the fine for the late return! I like finding ebooks online, especially free ones..project Gutenberg is a good source, and there are others..booksinmyphone (if you have a Java phone) lets you port books onto it that you can carry around anywhere..I have a Sherlock Holmes collection in my phone at the moment! you can change the font size, too,so as long as you can read text messages, you could be reading a book..

@LucyMatteo- You're welcome! They're constantly adding new (to them!) books and material..Gutenberg offers writing that is out of copyright,so it's free to borrow or take..they will accept donations to keep the work going, but it's the reader's call. @Minx Your phone doesn't have to be a fancy one, many phones have the Java software built in..Look up your phone model to check..if You can play games on it,or it has a colour screen, there's a good chance it might use Java.good Luck!

It depends on the book. Sometimes they can be a chore to get through, like War and Peace. That was just like bad medicine. Other books mean I don't get any sleep because I literally can't put it down. It's always "just one more chapter"... I'm always picking up cheap books at charity shops. I got a card for the new library in town, but I haven't been there yet. Probably because I wouldn't be able to carry all of the books I'd be picking up!

They were also written more toward a European audience.. lots of English variety words and phrases.. But that's okay. I like to broaden my vocabulary. :-) But as far as free reading goes.. I enjoyed them.. And Anytime you need help reading those books, just let me know.. lol

WOW!!! You read one book in 3-4 hours? It would be an achievement for me to read one in 3-4 days. I just don't read very fast mainly because my mind wanders too easily. I've read a book in a week, a couple of times, I think. I'm still reading a book that I started on last year. How is that for being a slow reader? Of course I did take a break from reading for about a month or two earlier this year. I enjoy reading but it's never been something that I can sit and do for hours on end.

I understand what you mean about continuity and needing to see how it ends. But I'll let you in on a little secret. The book that is taking me so long to read is nonfiction. It's about the Japanese Emperor Hirohito. My favorite books to read are about history and just about anything else that is educational. The book is taking me so long because it is very in-depth and has plenty of Japanese names and words. Fortunately, I'm within a hundred pages of finishing it. The good thing is other educational books I've read haven't taken me as long. But, I also read fiction. And, while it's easier to get really interested and lost in a good novel I still couldn't read one in a few hours. I guess there are just too many other things that I have to do and want to do that keeps me from spending that much consecutive time reading. And, like I said, after a few pages my brain and, I guess, my patience just njeeds a break.

I give you many KUDOS. I don't think I could read a history book. Me and history.. have never done well together.. in written form that is. I find some of the history channels fascinating.. especially if the topic is one I like. OR Depending on who is telling it.. I love watching Josh Bernstein going on explorations and listening to him narrate a story. I am all ears and eyes.. He's too cute. ;) I have read some non-fiction books.. Some true crime. I have this Awesome book The Wolf by L. David Mech. I found it fascinating! I hung on every word. I recommend it to anyone who has dogs or just like wolves. You learn so much of the wolf and canine behavior. It was so much easier for me to understand how my dogs thought or why they react they way they do after reading that book.

Wow, I don't think I could read that slow.. But I do understand about taking breaks from reading, I do it often too. I don't know why.. I think I need to read them fast because I need the continuity. I also get very curious and need to find out what is going to happen next.. If a year went by.. I really wouldn't care about the ending much more.. lol But, at least you do get to read... I have friends that don't even bother and I think it's something we all should do. It's great to get lost in a story once in awhile and take a short break from reality.

I could read a book within 24 hours. Well it depends on how thick it would be. I love reading too and I totally agree with you, books are expensive. Sadly I can't go to libraries since there are only few libraries here in the Philippines. I totally envy you for getting those books and just answer a survey bout it. I think that is a good idea. Sadly I think we do not have those. I would be broke if I buy books, books here in the Philippines are expensive. I like to read books very much, and last weekend,I went to library to read some, when time pasted very soon, I tried to buy some books so that I can read at home. When I browsed some hardcovers book, I found it's very expensive, so I cancelled my idea. Later, I found it's a good idea to read more free books, that is I searched the name of books in internet, and it's so amazing that I found so much of free ebooks, and I downloaded them into my cellphone,my cellphone can read txt format ebooks, so it's very convenient to read when I walk,or go to parks. It's all free. But the only defeat was the letter is not big when I read the books from my cellphone, sometimes, I felt my eyes very tired. So if you don't want to buy the expensive books, you can try to use this way to find and download more free ebooks to your cellphone to read them.

It depends on the book of course :-) I read about 80-100 pages an hour so I finish most books in an afternoon or in a day. I loved the Eragon movie.. But boy that book looked FAT. I love watching sci-fi, I mean LOVE it.. but reading sci-fi/fantasy is always more difficult for me - I have a hard time imagining characters that aren't real and I don't know what they look like. I did read a series once called K-9 Corps (I still have all the books). And the books were about a man who led a group of genetically altered dogs that he could communicate psychically with and they spoke. They were all huge -like Great Danes And they were an elite unit that handled lots of stuff other teams couldn't. It was really good reading.. I loved it because I could imagine what the dogs looked like. It's hard with fantasy books and their strange creatures.. But I love watching them on the screen. TV or Movies! I admire someone else's ability to turn their imagination into an actual 3-d character.

Ah, I wish I could buy all the books I want to read. But, the same as you, I'd be broke if I did that. Especially since I have a habit of collecting all the books in a series I've read even if I've already read some of them in the library. I love reading! Though lately, I've only been reading fanfiction and manga. For some odd reason I have bouts where I read lots of books and then if I have to wait for the next book in the series, I stop reading books almost immediately. Oh well. Most paperback books only last about 4, maybe 5 hours for me.

Indeed. Thankfully, those obsessions of mine also go through bouts themselves. For example, I was previously obsessed about the Arthurian Legends but now, it has moved on (after about five, six months) to Jackie Chan obsession! XD

LOL... I am totally the same way.. Not too long back I was obsessed with Zachary Quinto (from Heroes and Star Trek) that lasted for a few months. Thankfully it too has moved on. But whether he likes it or not he has a fan forever. You know I do the same thing with food. I will eat the same food a lot for weeks and then stop and obsess with something else. I didn't realize I did that until just a few years ago. Now I see it's a pattern in a lot of things I do.. Maybe I should do a study on myself. :-)

I love letting my imagination create a place i can easily see in my head.. that is why I love authors who are very descriptive. They can bring a page to life. One of the samples I read was good with the characters but not with the surroundings. And my image in my head was always trying to change as she added some other element way too late in the book that I think would have been important in the beginning for me to "see" the overall picture better. I love Nora Roberts she is such a great writer and story teller.

I adore books and I have many but I don’t get as much time as I would like to read which is very upsetting sometimes! If I am enjoying a book I can get through it quite quickly, that is if I can get to read it in the first place! I am a mother so books take second place to a lot of kid activities (LOL)! There are book clubs you can join; some are expensive because you are required to a new book on a regular basis. Are there book club meetings in your area? They’re usually fun and a good way to meet people although you still have to buy or borrow the book of the moment.

I am something of a book maniac, provided they book should hold my interest. The largest book i read in number of pages was, The Pillars of the Earth and it ran into something 600 and odd pages, that i did not put down accept for reasons i that were beyond my capacity. Once i get my hands on a book, i can read it on and on, as soon as i wakeup, inbetween time for bath and breakfast, in the car, in a plane, manytimes, i have got up in the middle of the night to finish off the book...

That sound exactly like me. I start a good book, and then I'm taking it everywhere with me. Folding clothes while reading. Taking it my son's soccer practice. Taking extra long in the bathroom just so I can read. When I take the kids to the library, I usaually check out about 6 books for the 2 wk check out time. And then I always end up going back sooner for more. Reading is such a great escape that you can't get with TV.

I'm a fast reader, but how long it takes me to go through a book depends on how interesting it is, and how many distractions I have at the moment. I'm kind of stuck in one right now because it's interesting, but it concentrates more on technology than on the characters, and that can get boring. I read a lot of free ebooks. Ever since I've discovered them, I've found a lot of good books online. My favorite site for finding them is Feedbooks -- http://feedbooks.com. You download the books to your computer. There are several formats, so you can read them as PDFs on your computer, or on your Kindle, if you have one. I read them in ePub format, on the Calibre app, which is a free ereader.

I thought about the e-books.. But I don't have a (portable)reader of any type and I don't think I would find sitting at my computer reading a book for hours relaxing. I really have to look into these things- I think I am behind the times. Do you have something that is portable? Welcome to MyLot by the way.

Great, Mylot just dropped out and I lost my post. Is having to get to 500 posts before you can copy and paste something new? I thought I remembered that it used to be 100. But that didn't stop the spammers. Anyway. Thanks for the welcome. I've been on Mylot before, but I got tired of it and dropped out. Then I couldn't track down my old signin info, so I'm having to start over. I don't have an device for reading, not even a cell phone. I agree that reading on the computer can get tiring after a while, especially if you don't have a comfortable chair. And I don't. I'm more or less planning to buy a Nook eventually. But I'm waiting for the price to come down. I can't see spending more than $100.00 just for something to read with. Amazon just dropped the prices on their Kindles, so I imagine all the other companies will be doing the same.
