I have never bought a cake for any occasion, except my wedding. When I need a cake for a birthday, or any occasion I just bake it. I am not a cake decorator, I just love to bake and my cakes always tast better than store bought cakes. It seems more personal if I put my own effort in baking for someone. How about you? Do you bake or buy a cake already made?

You are lucky enough that you can bake a cake. Since we don't have oven here then we are obligated to buy cakes and of course at least it is already decorated. If I only have the opportunity to bake cake then I will do it rather than buying it. Much more potato cake is my favorite flavor that is why I would love to learn it.

Yes, I am truly blessed to have the convenience of an oven to bake things. After reading this I will not take that for granted again.

I agree with you, the heart that you feel for the person you are baking for add taste to the cake that you are baking, and when they eat that they will feel warm and love...a different feeling...wish in the days to come I will learn how to bake different cakes...and hopefully I will have a budget to buy things and new oven to bake more cakes. God bless.

Just find a recipe that sounds good to you and try it out. Just experiment with different flavors. Good luck to you.

Although baking the birthday cake is much more meaningful. But I have to say that buying a birthday cake is much more convenient and the cake is much more professional and delicious. I prefer to buy a birthday cake. I can make the common cakes anytime I like. But I don't want to make a birthday cake by myself as I am afraid the failure will spoil the mood. I love China

When I bake a cake it is not decorated like a store bought cake but my cakes are always requested when we need a cake for someone. My brother-in-laws birthday is in a few weeks and I have already been asked to bake the cake. It's just a personal preference.

Good for you because you know how to bake and it's more advantage because you can bake your desired cake design and flavor, for me I don't know how to bake so I just buy one.

I have bought cakes in the past, but usually I make the flavor cake the person likes the best. I also make homemade frosting, or use whipped cream mixed with vanilla pudding or something else. I think homemade cakes are so much better than anything you can buy in the store. I don't like canned frostings. I think they taste like plastic, though they are easier to use than mixing your own. I think you can be really creative with homemade cakes, but let's face it, sometimes we just don't have the time to make them.

I usually make my own frosting as well. In a pinch I would buy canned frosting but I would rather have it homemade.

Wow!!! I salute you for being able to bake delicious cakes. I always just buy from bakeshops. The only challenging thing is where to buy them. You see, there are also people who make homemade cakes (especially those who get very good reviews and referrals for them), who also venture into small business selling them. Those are really good finds for me. You may want to make your talent into more revenue. Why not? ;)

If I could decorate the cake, I would love to but if someone is going to go to the trouble of buying a cake they usually want it decorated pretty too.

You are lucky that you know how to make birthday cakes, as well as have the time to do it yourself. As for me, I just buy birthday cakes. There are some local stores here that sell not so expensive but delicious birthday cakes. Have a nice day!

I have done both over the years. buying a birthday cake is more convenient, but can be more expensive. i take more joy out of baking a birthday cake myself. My 4 year old niece comes to me to tell me what kind of birthday cake she wants. It may be more time consuming to bake the cake but the rewards are worth every minute.

For me it really depends for who it is, and if i have the time. Recently i baked cupcakes and icing from scratch for my boyfriends birthday, but i wouldn't do the same for one of my not-so-close relatives, especially if i don't really like them. Baking cakes, cupcakes, cookies etc for people is a lot better, it makes me feel good especially if they tell me they really like them.
