That made me feel old!!

So I'm flipping through radio stations this morning in the car, and was playing my usual musical quiz with my 13 year old, whenever a song came on that I knew the artist of, I'd ask him if he knew who it was. Sadly, he immediately recognized Eminem and Maroon 5 songs that he'd never heard just by the voices.. but he was completely clueless when he heard "What's Love Got To Do With It" and a Bruce Springsteen song. Anyways, as usual I wanted to school him on some of the older classics, so I'm searching stations trying to find some good music from my childhood. Then I came across the oldies station my mom always used to listen to, it played like 50's and 60's music mostly... at least it used to. It's still the oldies station.. but the first song I heard on it was that Men At Work song.. "Land Down Under".. okay.. isn't that an 80's song?? Am I really that old that songs from my childhood are being played on the OLDIES station??? What the heck!

Well to me 80's songs aren't oldies, but I'm sure that today's 13 year olds would just roll their eyes at me. My kids get a healthy dose of Beatles and Elton John and other 60's and 70's classics, and they actually don't complain when I put the 80's station on. So they will end up recognizing, and yes, even liking, some older stuff. They really do not like Simon and Garfunkel (or either of them separately), Peter, Paul and Mary or some other oldies though.

Oh if I dance and/or sing, they get really embarrassed. (evil grin)

It wasn't all that long ago that I turned on an oldies radio station and also heard things from my childhood were on there. I actually wanted to hear what I thought of as oldies when I was a child, not what people today think is old music. Come on Bruce Springstein isn't really that much of an oldie. They just want to make those of us that are in our 30s feel like we are really over the hill, right? We need to stop this before we actually start to believe that we are old.

Yes, that's it, a conspiracy! I also wanted to hear actual oldies.. the stuff my mom used to listen to when I was a kid, which was music from her own childhood.. now that is oldies!

I am thinking that they figure anything maybe 20 years old and up is considered oldies now. I love listening to the oldies but I do still have a few favorites of the newbies of today..I am 36,but I guess to a kid I would be considered and oldie.

No, I don’t think you’re that old! The radio station, rather has some smart young a** who THINKS that 80’s are oldies! To me oldies is still the 50’s / 60’s and before that! I love listening to songs and am trying to inculcate the same in my son…we too have our music sessions. Whenever he comes across any song that’s from my childhood or teenage years, he becomes all excited and calls me as he knows that I love listening to those songs…they bring back memories of my childhood and teenage years and somehow make me relive those times!

Hey kats! I guess that's what happens to all of us sooner or later! Everything becomes oldies after a certain amount of years! I don't even listen to music from the 50 and 60's! That's too far back even for me!lol I still like the newer music and I love Eminem! I just bought his new "joint" (CD) and my boyfriend just loves to watch his "ole lady" rap! I can't help it, that's what I like! I also bought Alicia Keys, "Element of Freedom" which is really great too! And I still go back and listen to Zepplin or Pink Floyd depending on my mood!

I listen to a lot of different stuff from a lot of different decades.. depends on what I'm in the mood for. My hubby, who's all about rock and metal.. even likes one of Eminem's newer songs, the one on the radio with Rihanna.

I'm sixteen years old and the music I listen to is played on the oldies station. I'm pretty sure that doesn't make me old. By the way, "Land Down Under" used to be my favorite song :)

i dont have much to say but this your discussion brought a smile to my face it was really funny and yes i think they are trying to change the music on the radio stations to make it more a variety of music perhaps i know they probably made you feel stupid playing 80s music but believe me when i say this it is when you want to show certain things like the music your folks listened to before they will always fool you as well when you wait for something to happen something really funny your kid does and it never happens or does not happen the way it suppose to.

Oh that's to bad that you feel old because you know 80s music I actually don't know any from back then, but that's because I wasn't around back then. Even when I get old I am not going to let anything make me feel old because I will always feel young because that's how I like that. Even my mom she still feels young and she never wants to feel old and I think that's great.I think that even if you do know songs from the 80's you shouldn't feel old you should feel smart that you were able to remember the song names that's pretty impressive because not a lot of people have a good memory and yes I'm one of those that really forget things really easily and has to be reminded like all the time my friends always have to tell me over and over again because I am a forgetful person and I can't really do anything about that.Oh well maybe my memory will begin to improve, but then again maybe it wont who knows. Remember to feel young no matter what even my dad who is old he doesn't even admit to it because he still feels that he is young and actually I really think that he is because he can still do many things and he has a very good memory better than mine actually no fair. I wish I had a good memory too like my dad.

nope, you aren't. In my case, I usually want to learn and listen with those old school songs 1970's-present. They are pretty good to listen and to sing. The emotions are really expressed very well. Specially,David Pomeranz, I like his songs and a lot more.
