Hello Whitestitch. Your mother is right, you should never read in poor light. You might not notice it yet but your eyes will be straining and in later years your vision will deteriorate. We only get one pair of eyes so look after them

Yes eyes do naturally deteriorate but reading in dim light will speed up the process. If we were meant to read in the dark we'd have beams of light shining out of our eyes, we haven't so...

Not true. Most people's vision deteriorates as they get older, but that's natural and has nothing at all to do with straining your eyes when you're young. The worst thing about reading in poor light is that your eyes may get irritated, and you can get headaches. I just don't think it makes sense to read when you have to struggle to see the page. Put off reading until you have good light.

No, I would have to disagree with your mother. I frequently read with only dim light, typically while my husband is sleeping next to me, and I have never had any trouble with my vision. Although I would NEVER recommend going against your mother (hehehe), she might be wrong in this one particular instance.

Sorry but I don't think your optician would agree with you. Reading in dim light does cause long term damage to eyesight.

I agree with AutumnGold, reading in a dim light will cause eye problem, if not immediate, it will eventually.

Yes, what your mother says is absolutely correct! Reading activity needs sufficent level of illumination, but not high brightness. Make the necessary lighitng at the time of reading, otherwise your eyesight will affect and createeye problems also! Thanks and take care!!

I don´t if that is really a fact, but personally I can say that is truth. I used to read or study a lot after midnight without proper lighting and now I have to say I don´t have the sight that used to have when I was a kid.

True - reading in dim light is not good. I used to do my homework like that for around 3 years - so i basically spent a few hours at the desk - and then I discovere I don't see well the blackboard at school. And yeah, it's been like 5 years since I have glasses and unless I have a laser operation, I'll wear the glasses for the rest of my life. So take care of your eyes - they are really precious

According to Web MD and Richard Gans, MD, FACS, an ophthalmologist with the Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute reading in dim light will not permanently damage you eyes. It can cause eye fatigue and dry eye from the focusing strain but it will not cause permanent damage.

It depends on how dim it is. If you can read without any problem, then it is ok. But if you have difficulty in making out the letters, then you will have problems trying to concentrate and strain your eyes a lot. Reading in a bright light is much easier on your eyes.
