I shop online sometimes. Like you, I am also wary of online shopping. So I always just use the trusted sites to shop, like Ebay. At least in Ebay, you can actually see the feedback and ratings of the sellers and the buyers. I never shop in other online websites that I have never heard of.

Stick to well known sites, like Amazon. Don't go to their web site through an email, but type in the address in your address bar. Make sure that the page where you enter your credit or debit card information starts with "https" that denotes a secure page. If you're still not sure, ask a question about a product through their contact page or help email. If they answer in a timely manner and give a satisfactory answer, it's very probably a legitimate place to do business.

Buy at reliable online shops only. Perhaps there's also a quality mark in your country indicating that a webshop is reliable. Here in the Netherlands there are those quality marks and you have the right to cancel any purchases online within 7 days of receiving.

You can use paypal for payments, you can claim a refund if you don't get your goods within the timeline. If you are buying on e-bay then paisapay can be used, they take care of your money.... if the goods are delivered to you then no problem, if not you can claim a refund. When looking at a seller's products be sure to look at the reviews others have given him :)
