Hello there, someone has advised me to use Linux instead of Windows to keep viruses away. I want to know that is it true that using Linux frees from any virus threats at all ? I personally don't think it true. But because I never used or even saw Linux, I cannot say anything for sure. I need opinions from both Windows and Linux users. Thanks

Yeah you are right you won't see any virus on a Linux machine since it doesn't know how to run a Linux environment. And we must also differentiate a virus and a hacker being able to intrude your pc. Since a virus is a payload that needs to be automatically run on a infected machine and does not applicable to Linux environment because there a lot of level permission before a virus can replcate or even run and with a hacker he will find exploits and open ports to connect. Therefore a hacker can gain access to any exposed OS whether it's a Linux or Windows machine but a virus is only affects to MS OS products. As far as I know there no known virus on Linux.

Hi menolabaka, I would not say you are a 100 per cent safe from viruses but you actually are pretty safe using linux more than windows. There are so many viruses out there that you could catch just entering some weird website if you are working on windows. I have to say linux is pretty safe, but not like they don't have any virus at all. Windows being the most popular operating system has welcomed programmers to make more and more viruses. If linux would have been used at this large scale, there would have been many viruses for that as well. Linux is the safest OS! For now.

There are viruses that attack linux operating systems as well but they won't be as often and easy as a windows operating system can be attacked by a virus. I use windows on my laptop from the start and haven't had a single virus attack. I t depends on how you manage your windows OS. You should use a good anti-virus(I use Mcafee), firewall (comes with the anti-virus mostly or windows has its own) and some knowledge on self-executable files.

I am not quite familiar with linux but in my own understanding, there is no guarantee that you will be 100% sure that you will not be infected. Any virus can be programmed to exploit specific O.S. including Linux, but it is less common. I'm not really sure but I think almost 80% or more of the users around the globe prefers and uses Windows because of its flexibility, compatibility and user friendly interface compared to Linux. Linux are usually used by programmers and more advanced users, system administrators and even some are even Hackers. This is the reason why virus writers targets Windows systems because of its dominance in the market compared to Linux. So in your question, I can say that NO because there is no PERFECT when it comes to programming. As an advise, awareness in security and knowledge in dangers that these threats possesses, in the user's perspective is a must. Hope this answers your question. Thanks!
