History was made ad the start of the Iraq War when much of the beginning of it was televised live; now, history is being made again as the very last combat brigade exits the country. It had been reported all combat troops would leave by September 1 but the exact date was never given for security reasons. Well, today is the day. It's the middle of the night there now and the 4th Striker Brigade are on their way to Kuwait, currently about 20 miles from the border. As soon as all 400+ soldiers have entered Kuwait Operation Iraqi Freedom will officially be over! Tomorrow is my birthday so it's already the 19th in Iraq. What a birthday present! You can watch history unfolding exclusively on MSNBC. Annie

Lol...from what I've seen, Fox isn't even reporting it. Thank you but I'm not celebrating anymore unless I can go backwards! Annie

Just pick a good age you want to re-celebrate and do that one. This past birthday I decided I was going to RE-celebrate being 25. LOL

Happy belated b-day (sorry, haven't been around much lately). This is one of the few things I do applaud Obama for, that he pretty much stuck with the plan left in place in Iraq. It was a mistake to ever go in and an even bigger mistake to go in the way we did....Rumsfeld was an IDIOT and he is responsible for unnecessary soldier deaths because of the way he orchestrated the initial actions over there. Now all we need to do is get the other 50 thousands troops being left behind and we're done. I am glad this turned out to be a victory for us though...you cannot "end" a war, you either win it or lose it....and it looks like we won this one.

I've noticed you've been MIA lately, X. Thanks for the birthday wishes. I couldn't agree more that we now need to bring the rest of our troops home. I hope we won this one but I've never quite been able to figure out what victory actually meant. Annie

Annie, happy birthday!I haven't read this until here. I think it's really great! In fact, war does hurt everyone who experienced it deeply. So...it's really good news for both side of people. For Iraqi, they are farther away from war; for soldiers from other countries, they won't go to battlefield again. It's so excellent!

Happy Birthday Annie!!!!! About time is all I can say. We never should have been there in the first place. I am sure we will have "peace keeping" troops there for a while. But it is nice to see Iraq in charge of Iraq instead of the US. It is time they stood on their own two feet and made their own way as their own country.

Amen - and thank you for the birthday wishes. I sure hope they get their act together, too. At least our troops that will remain there will be doing things other than combat. By the way, it's official now, they're all in Kuwait. Annie

All I can say Annie is...It's about time! This is indeed great news, the Iraqi people didn't want us there to begin with.

I just heard some of them are a bit nervous about how things will be now that they're sort of on their own. I mean, there will still be 50,000 troops there but not in combat roles but for training purposes. Annie

Interesting post, annie (and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!). I think it's beneficial for both the soldiers (and their families) and to Iraq as a Sovereign State, as well. The soldiers can now have dinner or weekend lunch together with their beloved ones. I guess being with your family and other loved ones is priceless. It is also worthwhile for Iraq to have its sovereignty back as a recognized State. Without interference from other countries is an important aspect of sovereignty; in absence of any interference is the only way a state can fully exist as a state.

Thanks so much and welcome to myLot. May ou enjoy it here as much as I do. I agree, Iraq needs to learn to fend for itself. And WE need to learn to mind our own business! Annie

So cool, I am glad they are coming home, but I hope that they don't have to go back to Iraq, and I hope that Iran stays the hell away from Iraq and Kuwait. Bring the boys home!

I applaud those men and women who care enough about the principles of freedom and who had the courage to go over there and fight. They are to be congratulated.

And yet, we are still not out of there. We need to pull every last troop out and not have any bases there.

While I cannot assess the political situation, it's wonderful to see so many of those brave men and women who fight for our freedom daily, "come home". I watched on You Tube as President and Mrs. Bush welcomed some who arrived in TX. Having watched the President's genuine tears and concerns for all Americans, especially those who so selflessly serve, it was a joy to see him smile! It was deeply moving to see these young, and not so young, men, in particular who had a joyous homecoming. I would not want to see MSNBC's particular spin on all things "news", though.

There really was no "spin" to speak of. They showed the convoys crossing the border into Kuwait and there were a few interviews with the soldiers. Annie

Yes, I just heard it on the news. There will still be troops there, but they are not combat troops. They are trainers and advisors. My son served in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, so I think I know how the families of these brave Americans feel. I just hope they don't end up in Afganistan,

My thoughts exactly! Since I think they may have made it so they have to have more time between deployments, hopefully things will be starting to wind down in Afghanistan before these guys' time is up. Annie

First let me wish you a happy birthday. Do you have any friends or family members there? My brother is doing contract work in Iraq. I'm hoping he'll be able to come home soon too.
