I have to say that when I read I find myself talking, writing and typing in a more eloquent and philosophical way. It really improves the way I use English. For those learning english I think it would definitely help to learn english. I've learned bits and pieces of other languages by reading english to books.

Hi, I not only think that reading is the better way, but I think it is the best way to improve your language. Perhaps extensive reading is the only way to improve the skill. There are two things that are considered as prerequisites. The vocabulary and the grammar are to be studied separately. I suggest that vocabulary is to be learned first. The amount of study usually varies. For example in english language there are approximately 1,000 words that you have to know in order to carry out an intelligent conversation. If you can remember at least 3,500 words then you will be able to write excellent english. The number of words you need actually depends on your purpose for studying the language. The next important thing is grammar that you have to have a fair in. But there are a few things that go well beyond grammar and vocabulary, style being one of them. This, you have to acquire through reading and reading only. Thanks. God bless you

Reading allows you to see how the language is used and how it should be spoken. If you do it consistently and check the meanings of some difficult words if any you would understand the message clearer. Reading should also sharpen your reasoning and analytical skills. Besides a good language and idea/concept make a good learning experience. So read well and keep reading!

Yes I think it is possible to improve any language skills by reading. I improve my English comprehension, writing and reading skills by reading lots of novels. Now I think my English is a lot better. Try it. You will learn for sure and at the same time enjoy some of the best novels out there.

Yeah, if you want to improve your English keep on reading and if you don't know some words look it on the dictionary. You can also read thesaurus and you must exercise to speak using English. For example talk to your children in English. Practice makes perfect. Goodluck!

Yes because it hone your comprehension skills. Besides you gain more vocabulary when you encounter words that are not familiar with you. You try to look for context clues and when you can't guess the meaning via context clues you look at the dictionary in order to familiar yourself with more vocabularies.

as many have said, i agree as well that reading helps to improve our language and so many other things at the same time. english is not my first language but because i was interested in reading story books since young, my english has improved dramatically. it doesn't have to be specific materials that you need to read. you can read whatever you want to read; be it novels, non-fiction, biographies, etc. your vocabulary will be much better as you will come across the same words used in different sentences. you will also learn the proper way to write a sentence grammatically correct as you will have read similar sentences umpteen times. it even helps to read the subtitles of any movie. it helps your eye motor skills, learn new language slowly and basically, still improve your language usage and english. it worked for me. it might take long to see the progress but it'll be there so don't be disheartened if you don't feel as if you have improved.

Yes, reading is a good way to improve one's vocabulary. However, have you ever thought of reading aloud. One becomes much more familiar with words when they are said aloud. For me, it improves my cognition. If possible, read aloud to someone who is fluent in the language you are reading. That person will be able to help with the correct way to pronounce words that might be giving you trouble.

Yes, I think that there's a lot of truth to this! I love to read and reading definitely improves your communication skills, reading as well as writing! You also tend to increase the power of your word usage and vocabulary! I generally love reading fiction but in truth, it doesn't matter what you read just as long as you continue to read! I think that reading also increases your knowledge! I'm a member of a home book club and one of their mottos is "read to live!" "live to read!" Again, I think that there's a lot of truth in that statement. I generally read horror books and my favourite author is Stephen King! When you read any author you start to utilise his use of language into your own language usage and you are more able to express yourself better. Anyway, good luck with your future reading. At present I'm reading Harry Potter, this must be the third time that I have turned to the Harry Potter books now! Andrew

Yes. It works for someone with more than one language or with someone whose only language is English. A girlfriend and I needed more English credits to get our AA degree. She had already had English I and was in class II. I had taken none of those classes. We both took the CLEP test. I read a LOT. Even by bookworm standards, I read a lot. She doesn't. I was shocked to breeze through the CLEP test and actually clepped out of English I,II, and III. She didn't even pass English I with the test. Our intelligence didn't make the difference. She was way smarter than me. Her classes were tougher and harder. I couldn't have passed them. But because I read so much, I instinctively knew which answers were right. I'd seen the correct way to do things over and over in the books I'd read. I wasn't consciously paying attention, but somewhere in my mind, something was jotting notes!!

Reading is a great way to see how the authors use that language, and it helps stimulate your brain. Talking with others that speak that language could also help you improve the language you want to learn.

I think it is posible, but the best way to make our language better is to practice with someone, because when you practice you can talk, write and read more easy, and you can even understand faster.

Yes, reading can help you improve your language. Not just that, but it also helps improve your comprehension, your ability to retain information, and it's fun too! Read anything and everything. Books, magazines, newspapers... novels, research, encyclopedias... Anything you read can help you learn.

Language, any language, is a cultural thing. It is a part of our identity. As such, if one wants to learn a language one needs to make it a part of one's identity. After all, when you learn the language you will not be exactly the same person you were before. Reading will definately help you, but you also must embrace the other dynamics of the language like speaking and writing. The reading and writing will enhance our knowledge of the symbolic aspects and the speaking will connect our knowledge with the emotional and spiritual expressions. The speaking will also help you to learn the nonverbal cues and inflections that are also part of any language. Reading is a very good source of exposure to a language so it will definately help
