Squatters

We are building a house in Davao City, Philippines. We have a caretaker living on site while we are away. He gets free rent and power and P500 a month. He has allowed squatters to build in front of our lot on highway land. They have built in concrete block and are using our power and water. We were hoping to use this small strip ourselves as it has a couple of nice mango trees on it. Apart from finding a new caretaker what do you suggest would be the appropriate action to take.

Judging by the scenes I often see on TV, getting those squatters off your land can be difficult and dangerous on your side if you try to do it yourself. Try to ask help from a lawyer and local authorities to help you vacate those squatters. Then, invest in a concrete fence that will keep them away from your property. It might be costly but would be the best choice. Good luck!

If the lot the squatters occupied is part of your right of way, you have the right to make them vacate the area. However, i think it will take a lot of judicial procedures and you need to consult a lawyer.
