Do you work on internal targets?

Some people work very well on internal targets. I am not too bad, but I work best when there is a deadline, an assignment to be completed and submitted. Do you set targets for yourself and accomplish them diligently? Do you work when there is some external force? Please share your experiences.

I am a bit lethargic while executing decisions. But once I decide, I work day and night and finish my job. I want to keep up my word. I cannot tolerate bad name in my work.

That is very true. When you take up freelancing you are repsonsible for yourself and you would hate it if your reputation suffers.

Yes, even though I am retired, I am still rather driven. I like to make lists of things to do and am pretty good about keeping to them. Friends laugh because I am always yanking my smart phone out to check my calendar, and its little alarm is always going off to remind me of my "appointments." Some people do not like to live like that, but I like a schedule and am interested in staying ahead of deadlines.

The problem with me is I am a procrastinator and a fickle minded person. But given the urgency of any matters, I can and will be able to deliver if needed. I don't set targets as I know I'll be stressed to reach deadline.

Hi kalav,I'm like you. Without deadline I can't complete any work. I'm very lazy person. I have wasted many valuable time of my life for my laziness.

I work very efficiently when there is a deadline. But, if someone breathes down my neck then it is simply not on.I would get nervous and won't work well. I need to set my targets for an external deadline and work peacefully.

If there is someone to take away the boring part of any project that I may line up believe me it is done with ease, with interest and enthusiasm much before the deadline. Even a simple chore as cooking I need someone around to do the chopping, cleaning, the works and something perfect, something yummy will be on the table. I am a good organiser but I must have someone around.

Cooking is very simple if someone cuts all vegetables and also cleans up the kitchen after everyone has eaten. It is the extra work that consumes time and energy. But, in India, we are able to get hired help for this task and that is a big relief.

Do I trace a tinge of something akin to sadness today? Hope things are fine with you.

I do lose because of this weakness of mine. Even though I have the capacity I want someone around which gives me the impetus to carry on. I will shoulder the full responsibility but I cannot do it alone.

Internal target provides one a direction to reach the goal within the timeframe and budgeted cost. It promotes self-discipline and sense of commitment to achieve one's objective at a comfortable pace. I use to fix target for myself for all important tasks and strives to achieve as per the time schedule. I always analyse my strengths and limitations and also the external forces while planning for some assignment. In the process of executing the plan,I explore all possible supports and resources from both internal and external environment to enrich and expedite the work assigned to me.

Hi Riyasam! What I meant by internal targets was to set a time limit for a particular task and finish it by then without any external compulsion. Thanks a lot for the participation. You definitley seem to have it; it cannot be otherwise with enabling husband and children geting ready in the morning for their respective routine work.YOuw ould naturally have to pack lunch, get them readya nd I know how busy mornings are. YOu also have a medical practice isn't it?

I am bad with deadlines. I am a good learner, doer as long as I need to do it for the sake of it. whenever other factors come in I am horrible. As a child, I dreaded the exams and while the same task I would do with finesse had there been no compulsion.

I am not good with deadlines! It’s a psychological thing for me; I am usually doing fine until I am told I have a deadline and that will be the end of me! It’s funny because I can work efficiently at a reasonable pace and can easily reach my goals; I just hate the idea of a time limit! If I pitch an idea to an editor I almost always already have most of the piece already done so that if I am given a deadline I just have to edit changes and not start from nothing because that would stress me way too much! Personally I do have reasonable goals for myself every day and that is fine.

Normally when we do things in a hurry , the simplest of tasks get complicated and that is why it is said 'haste makes waste'. And as you had written Paula, it is purely psychological because you say you work efficently at a reasonable pace. THe thought of a 'deadline' probably puts you off .THnaks a lot for your participation. I like deadlines but I still would like peace and my own pace to work at it. If soemone breathes down my neck then that is the end of it.If I have an assignment I would finish it systematically but if someone is to come after me with 'have you finished ?'I just would get stressed out.

i have the same feeling with you. we can do well when we do things step by step. but if we ware told the time limits. we may make mistakes and can't finish them well. so don't push me when i want to finish some great. haha, i have tried to practise myself myself calm down mo matter how short time it is.

I work well with an internal target.Though my first job made me accustomed to external targets i.e targets set by a higher authority. The thing that has worked for me is to divide the bigger target into smaller targets and achieve each one within a time frame.Ultimately i found we can complete the bigger target if we complete these smaller targets.I'm a self driven person and i can work well according to internal motivation.

That calls for a lot of discipline and it is a very good thing. You seem to have a good plan also and I agree when you split it into smaller tasks the work gets done faster.

I do, I think it is important, because otherwise it is hard for me to keep track of if I am going in the right direction or not, you know? So I constantly have to do-lists, targets and goals in my head, and all that kind of stuff, and I honestly try to stick to it too!

True.It is a good idea to have a list and keep working according to plan.THanks a lot for the response. THe trouble arises only when we get our priorities mixed up and leave on e,or two thing s in t he list.Calls for a great deal of self-discipline.
