Why is apple logo with a bite on Apple?

One of my friend informed me that the idea of having the bite on the apple logo is to not to confuse apple with tommoto.

It's really interesting question. in fact I do wonder why they chose this logo. Your explaination is funny, but I would like to accept it. I think you are right. If it's a whole apple it would cause confusion, also it would be too boring. I like the logo with a bite on apple because it made the company alive and young. Your explaination would be unforgetable to me.

They said its the "LAST megaBITE" as respect to the British mathematician named Alan something... who has huge contribution to computer programming. Another fact.. the apple first logo was an apple beside the word "apple" the round shape of the small "a" over lapse the apple so that's the bite. bite also symbolize "knowledge" like what adam and eve got when they bitten the apple. and I guess it's because it wouldn't be mistaken as other kind of fruit too. ^.^

cybercop thats not the reason, many of the big companies have very strong reason for a logo. Its the face of their business.
