As far as your short stories, you really have to start by doing some research into your particular genre for magazines and such that will purchase your articles. It is infinitely harder to sell fiction pieces than it is to sell your normal run of the mill articles.

There are a lot of websites that will accept poetry and short stories, but few or none that will pay for them. On a site like Gather, you can post your poetry and stories, and they will get the same points that any other writing on that site will get you. Points add up to a gift card, but that's probably about as much as you can expect. If you want to write online and actually get paid for it, you need to write articles. Bukisa, Triond, Associated Content are just a few of the sites that pay, but for page views. Associated Content pays upfront if you live in the US and if they think your article is worth it. They also pay for page views, but no longer allow that for anyone outside the US.
