Does anything annoy you about where you're currently living?

Ottawa - City of Ottawa
Canada

I live in an apartment on the outskirts of my city that is big, affordable, and relatively quiet. However, there are still things that annoy me about it. Because I'm out on the outskirts and don't have a car, it is difficult getting where I need to go and will probably be a big problem in the winter. My city is also a love/hate relationship. I live in Ottawa, the capital of Canada. I enjoy the local scene here - there are lots of extremely talented poets and musicians - and I love the clash of old, gothic-style buildings mixing in with new skyscrapers in the downtown core. However, the winter is a brutal time of year and sometimes it feels like there's nothing interesting to do. How about you? What annoys you about both your apartment/house, and your city?

Having owned my own home for a very long time and having lost after my job lost, I moved in with my boyfriend in an apartment building where it was heaven as we were there all alone for the last 3 years. Now upstairs moved in is a couple with a toddler who stays up really late. At 3am and 4am this child is pounding back and forth and the couple themselves although small framed walk like Fred Munsters pounding on the floor. Normally thing don't usually irritate me this really does as these people have no idea that one day I will flip and grab the broom and pound right back. UGH!

Yes the couple seem really nice but take no notice to the racket and our landlord apparently does not care as we have spoken to him twice and once there after to the tenants and they said it was the first they had heard about it, but the noise persists. Ugh.

Have you talked to them or your landlord about it yet? I had a similar issue in a previous apartment, and I talked to the guy who lived there and he was very nice and was more careful about the noise he made.

That's pretty terrible, I'm sorry to hear you have to put up with that. I'd probably keep complaining to the landlord until they did something about it. Best of luck with the situation, I hope it gets better.

i'm annoyed every single day by an eternally buzzing tv. i live in a dormitory. i'm in the 2nd floor, and right under my room is the common area/lobby. i just seems like somebody watches something on the tv for as long as i'm awake, and i can hear the noise from my room. i just hate it. last night, somebody watched a replay of miss universe, and the was just too loud. people can really be insensitive. i couldn't concentrate on what i was reading. *sigh*

Oh that would annoy me to greygoo.....Hope you get through it...

Ahh yeah, dormitories can seriously suck. I lived in one my first year of university and luckily I was on the smallest floor there was, so it was always very quiet. Every other building and floor though - oh, people didn't care about one another at all. I still miss being right beside all my classes too.

Well, there's the crows living on the roof, it makes a lot of noise every now and then :-) Then there's the hospital. I live just by it and they are rebuilding it, and living in the middle of a contruction site isn't really that funny. There's the advantage of nice sunset with cranes in them though ;-) http://www.picable.com/Nature/Sunsets/Hospital-and-Crane-in-Sunset.1515774 Then there's the very simple fact that Trondheim isn't Vienna :-) I studied in Vienna and lately I've been thinking a lot about trying to find a job there.

Yes, I took it from my veranda. The cranes aren't very pretty most of the time, so it's important to grab the moment when it's there :-) Trondheim is about a third up north in Norway, it's the third largest city but it's not that big. About 180 000 inhabitants at the moment I think. I like it here, but I miss the concerts and all the culture in Vienna. And Vienna itself. I might move back one day, for a some years or forever. And go back to Trondheim every summer, so I don't get cranky when it's dark and too warm in the night.
• Canada
31 Aug 10
Ohhh that looks gorgeous, even with the crane! Very unique. Did you take the picture yourself? Vienna seems beautiful, I've always wanted to visit (I have friends who have.) Haven't heard much about Trondheim though, is it a large city?

Yes, a lot of things annoy me. I'm from Canada too, and my city is boring, I'll tell you that. Infact you might actually be able to guess what my city is.. It's a capital, and it's boring. One thing I don't like about where I live is my neighbors. It's a nice looking neighborhood, and they make it look tacky. They have no curtains. Their living room curtains are a Canadian flag. They don't mow their lawn ever. They sleep on their living room floor, and have lawn chairs in their living room. Since they have no curtains, everyone can see this..

Hmm, are you on the east coast? Most of the west coast capitals seem like they'd be quite fun, but I've only been in the west coast in the US, so I'm not sure! I've walked by houses a few blocks from my old neighborhood, and they had Bob Marley 'flags' - and even a Confederate flag, if you can believe it! - hanging in the windows. It's pretty ridiculous.
• Canada
31 Aug 10
Nope, like I said.. My city isn't too fun. I would love to go to the West Coast. I have never been there, I've been to the East Coast though. Haha, that is ridiculous! When I move I plan on going to a way nicer neighborhood.

Hi! I live in a small village which is about 15 to 20 minutes away from the city and and what really annoys me a lot is our water supply. During weekdays our water supply is turned off from 5:30 in the morning up to 3:00 in the afternoon and during weekends supply is turned off from 5:30 in the morning up to 6:30 in the evening. It has been like this for almost 20 years now and the reason is due to the upgrading and the improvement of the water system according to the city water district. But, does it take a lot of years to do this??? When will they ever finish solving these water supply problem??? It's too much already, we've been suffering for so many years now having a hard time with our laundry, dish washing, bathing and most of all our drinking water. We had to buy big water containers to store water and this so tiring, just imagine we've been doing this everyday for almost 20 years now. Isn't this really super annoying??? grrr!!!

Wow, that is the most legitimate reason to be annoyed by where you're living yet. I can't imagine how difficult that would be. I try to be very aware of how much water I use and limit it as best that I can, but to not be able to access it at all - that is so difficult. I really hope that this will be resolved for you soon.

Well, for starters I am currently roommates with my ex husband and his girlfriend. If that doesn't annoy you, nothing will! I also have noticed since moving back to this town from a smaller one, that everyone here seems really unhappy and anti social. When you live in a smaller town, people wave at you as you are walking down the street, and everyone says hi whether they know you or not. Here people tend to look away from you or even scowl if you look at them. When you look around you hardly see anyone smiling. It's kind of depressing!
• Canada
30 Aug 10
That would be incredibly difficult, how do you manage? I've never lived in a super small town, just medium sized ones. People are friendly here, but not say-hi-to-strangers friendly. That works for me though, because I sort of like being in my own personal world while wandering around the city.

I live on the outskirts of Washington DC and it is crazy! I'm from a small town in North Carolina and the traffic around here drives me batty. I live about 3 miles from the gym and it takes me almost 30 minutes to get there. How ridiculous is that?
• Canada
31 Aug 10
That's pretty crazy actually, I'd probably just walk/jog to the gym as part of my workout :P I can't really handle bad traffic, and that's one of the reasons I don't have a car. Public transportation is fairly good in DC though, right?

Hmmmm well lets see where do I start lol....Well first of all I love the area where I am it is close to my sons school and downtown as I don't drive either but my son does so that helps....I finally have my learners tho... Now lets just say the things that annoy me with this house it's OLD rundown and unsafe and the owner is taking his sweet time or rather the contractors that were hired I have to sit at home all day every day waiting one these darn workers to show up there is a water leak in the basment and I don't think the people hired know what the heck they are doing....
• Canada
30 Aug 10
Sounds like a good place to be. I miss being close to downtown! It's a shame about your house being unsafe though, did you recently move into it? And could you talk to your landlord and make sure he was around instead of you? I'm sure it's annoying to have to sit at home all the time waiting for people to fix your house.

I love where I live because it's out in the country, and I can't complain too much about the living situation either. My husband and I still live with his parents, and sometimes it is nice because we don't have to pay for anything except for our own bills and wants, but then other times I wish we lived on our own for nothing else but more peace and quiet. My husband and I have it pretty good though because now that he works third shift, most of the week we or I have the house quiet and to ourselves because usually someone is sleeping at night.

It's good to look at the positive side of things. I've always wanted to live out in the country a bit, but it hasn't been a practical choice for me yet. Are you and your husband looking to move out anytime soon?

I also live in an apartment building in a housing colony which is a satellite township off the main city. I love everything about this township..It is planned, neat and less polluted. But our building is next to an empty plot which was recently emptied by the corporation. A small plant nursery was there till recently until the residents realized the need for an auditorium with a food court. Now under the rules of township no such buildings are allowed and some people are bending rules to get it erected before the new government forms. The problem is the proposed building is six floors high and the food court is on the top floor with open terrace. The traffic will increase, in fact choke this corner, pollution will increase and their will be peering eyes everywhere!!! I hope the plan is stalled as there are people who are planning to oppose and get a stay for it.
• Canada
30 Aug 10
Where do you live malpoa? It sounds nice, so I hope the plan is stalled too. It's disappointing that a plant nursery would become an auditorium, I'd definitely fight against that as best as I could.

Everything seems annoying to me now. I live in a rented little house where before has a wide view in front cause there were no building in front of the house. It gave a sense spacious living area. Now, there were luxurious two story houses built in front of the my rented house where as I open my front door, the people in one of this luxury house (which is directly in front of my house) will see whatever I did my own house. I like to open the front door as it has a nice breeze in this hot weather. And the house on the right side is now rented to a catering service. They do not build a proper sewage, they just dump it on the little street going to my house. The trash, too. SO you can imagine how awful every time I pass this little street. And the last one is that the water pump is nor working. Every two days it needs to be fixed. The house owner did not want to changed it. So, I ended up going to friends house to take a shower frequently. I wish I could move to the one of the luxury houses in front of mine.
• Canada
30 Aug 10
Oh that's too bad.. having a nice, open view is pretty important for when I'm choosing a place to live. As for the catering people dumping sewage on the street, that sounds terribly unsanitary! I'd call city hall and see if I could report them.

When we bought this house, it was a middle-class neighborhood, but it has changed drastically. Most of the people are unembloyed and have no pride in their homes, since most of them rent. The whole complexion of the neighborhood has changed, and we want to sell this house and get out of here, but no one else wants to lilve here, either.

I hope you're able to find a buyer. My parents have been attempting to sell their house for the last year, and it's in a wonderful neighborhood, but it's a tough market at the moment.

hello jupiter, i life in very beautiful city at java island.but there`s nothing perfect in this world. this city is grow rapidly, so there traffic jam every where. since it grow to be bigger city, some people are changed too. they more individual or something, lose their kindness and always think about them self. for me it`s really annoying.
• Canada
31 Aug 10
I agree there is nothing perfect in existence, but at least you live on a beautiful island! It is too bad that it is rapidly expanding though. I understand the difference between the attitudes of those in small cities and those in larger cities. Kindness definitely lessens depending on the size of the town.

Well The only thing that i did not like about our place is that the land lord/ lady's son is living at the other end of the apartment and he's got this mirror facing the gate so he could see who you bring in to your house, what you bring inside the house! They would always go out and innocently ask etc whenever you come around! stupid move as if we don't know what they are doing.. it is really close to invasion of privacy! no wonder no one stays long in that place. its the son who always is trying to make a scene out of the tenants! he is really annoying and you can't even talk on the phone when you're in the garage!

Pretty much everything about my house irritates me. We bought a fixer-upper because it was all we could afford. We can't afford to fix it up though. The bathroom is hideous. The floor is probably not safe. There is no exhaust fan. The bathtub is hideously stained. No amount of bleach will make it clean. The kitchen is straight from the 60's. The stove only has one burner that works. It is one of the small ones. The most annoying thing is my unemployed 23 year old who never leaves.

The number one thing is that I live with my family.. haha, I wish I can live on my own. Also our house is close to a roof plant and it can get pretty disgusting. There are a lot of motorcyclists too and they make a lot of noise. One of my neighbor is really mean. There are a lot of kids who throw eggs at houses and ours. There's a lot that annoys me!

What annoys me most about this city are the house prices. On television we hear of them coming down..but not here! For some reason houses in Carlisle have remained the same. HIGH! This is great if you have the money to move because your house is probably worth more than what you paid for it in the first place. Unfortunately, speculators came in, made a fast buck and houses that aren't worth the high prices have remained high, therefore if we moved we'd have to find something cheaper than this house, that was peanuts when John moved in 12 years ago. It isn't peanuts now but we haven't the money to do it up..apart from the kitchen 2 years ago. I hope all this makes sense. What I'm trying to say is this house is not worth the high price it now is and no-one would move in here at the moment because it needs money spending on it. Basically, one cannot buy a small, terraced house or apartment for less than £85,000. It's a joke. Apart from that Carlisle is great lol.

Myself and my live in our own house. We are old. The neighbors are wealthy and live in luxury. One of their necessities is a dog may be one or two to protect their wealth. So all our neighbors have one or two dogs.May be there are 6 or 7 dogs in our neighborhood. It is a well known fact that the main duty of dogs to watch and alerts their masters. They re very faithful and do their duties correctly and regularly. In discharging their duties these are wakeful throughout night and small movement nearby they begin to bark. One dog or the other does this frequently with the result we the old couple are the worst victims. Pity us . that is enough.
