Hi to all mylotters, native or non-native english speakers, I always wanted to be a teacher. Online or classroom based. But since English efficiency and proficiency is required I guess it is the reason why I didn't able to get this job. Since, i graduated I wasn't able to get the job of what I want and passion. I was interviewed before and he said i need to improve my English as my intonation sounds my native dialect. How can i be a good English speaker. I was appointed before to read a piece of note on the stage but one woman stop it and told me in my face that my English is not good.....It quite embarrassing but i know its true. Any suggestion please. Thanks.

The first thing I would like to tell you, that you have to be very dedicated towards improving english. In the back of your mind there should always be this thought. Some ways to improve your oral english, these may seem simple to you, but they are very powerful and all of these should be done on a daily basis. Read english newspaper, english magazine or anything in english for atleast 20-25 minutes a day loudly, keep in mind you have to read loudly like the way we did during our school days. Speak to all those people in english who understand english. Don't wory if the abuse you, make fun of you, etc. If they are doing this, they will not do it to you for more than 15 days(this average is according to a survey). Watch English news for atleast half hour. Watch English movies on your PC using an headphone or earphones, while watching movies please reverse the scene if you dont understand any dialog. If you follow the above simultaneously for even three months, on a continious basis, I bet on you, that your english would have imploved like anything and you would be so fluent that you just cannot imagine right now. And also keep lotting on mylot, this will help improving your written english as well as vocabulary.

Your grammar could use a little improvement, but as far as the written word you are doing very well. I think the best thing for you to do is listen to english speakers either on television, or on the radio, even on youtube. If you can listen to them you might find that gradually you will start to intone things better and without using your natural accent, as that seems to be the problem for you getting into the job you want. I feel that as long as your understood it shouldn't matter, but I'm not the boss so...

Hi cowgirl, hehe, Right. As long as we can communicate and understand each other. But mostly here, they are looking for american/english accent employee. I am using or speaking 4 Philippine local languages, that's why my tone is kind of mixed-up. I agree, Radio and television will be helpful. Thanks for sharing. God bless.

I see you are from the Philippines, when I hear people from your country speaking English it sounds mono-tonal. I think it will help if you can listen to the World Service from the BBC on the radio. Try to hear the rhythm and intonation. English as spoken by a native varies in speed, pitch and rhythm. Try to speak with an open mouth and in the centre or back of your mouth not with a closed mouth at the front. Even if your aim is to speak Americanise not English it may help to read Shakespearean verse. Although the language is archaic it may give you an idea of the rhythm. When you ask a question and only when you ask a question your pitch should rise at the end of the sentence. all the best urban

Thank you also about the idea of Shakespeare. And also, on how to articulate using an open mouth...It helps me...God bless. and happy mylotting!

the best way to learn English is to go live for a long period in an English speaking country. The more time you spend there, the better your English will get.

I used to have very broken English, not to say I'm good in English now, but at least better than before. I think it will be effective if you can speak and practice your language with someone who is really great in English. I learn English from my friend, and I speak English with him everyday. It's been 3 years and I'm glad that I have no problem for my class presentation. Learning from a group of friends always make us learn faster than alone.

hello speedy, since this problem is just like common problem in my country (or our country), i just realize that sometimes people in my society always deny this language because they hate it. so i think the first that we have to do is love this material first, and i believe the result will come sooner or later.

i would strongly suggest that you read and speak in english more often and chat with someone patient and knowledgeable enough to correct you. English communication gets better in time. I have looked at your profile and saw that you came from Iloilo. I kinda like the way an Ilongga speaks. Isnt Miriam Defensor Santiago an Ilongga? Do not see your native dialect as a factor that blows you off in the english grammar, you have more advantages than you know. Dont rush it, it comes in time and practice.

Was reading this post of yours. You are already doing great! As for your speaking skills, you have to work on that by pronouncing the words well. Watch English movies of good actors and actresses and follow their speech pattern and how they pronounce words. Imitate them as much as you can. You can improve with constant practice. Practice makes perfect, right?!

I think you have to know deeply your thoughts. We belong to a different type of learner. Example. 1. visual; 2. audio; 3. kinetic. Identify where you fall in. Then dwell on it. In such way, you will gain your confidence and interest in learning English. Next, practice ....practice more...!

First of all, I would like to tell you to do not lose hope. There is still a solution to your problem. You have to know what is really wrong with you. Analyze what makes your English different from others. In your case, you said that your English has an intonation sounds from your native dialect. In order to solve that problem then, practice reading sentences with proper intonation. You can search for sites with voice coach on proper pronunciation and intonation of English words. Work hard and be curious on how you pronounce the words and make sure that it was properly delivered. Try to talk with others who can speak English normally. By doing that, your intonation will disappear little by little.

As I read your article, I can't find grammar mistakes. I think you are better than me when it comes to English but when it comes to speaking I always practice a lot. Constant practice will lead to fluency. As I remember, after i graduated from University, I didn't have good English either. What I did was I bought some books and CD's about how to speak English fluently. I bought some pronunciation books and American Accent training Program. You can also search on the net about the proper pronunciation. As my trainer told me just exaggerate the way you speak, of course, with the correct lips position. That's the reason American said read my lips. I know at first it is really uncomfortable it sounds like Conio but you are going to used with it. You must know the different vowels. In filipino we only have 5 vowels like a, e, i, o, u. However in English we have over 17 vowels they have the short sound and long sound, and some combination and diphthongs. You can also buy some American movies and imitate them as closer you are.I know it sounds silly but it is effective. And whenever you speak, think and feel that you are a native one so that you can speak like them. I hope that my piece of advice helps you.

A lot have asked this question here in mylot and i always say that practice makes perfect. If you get to practice your English everyday i think you will really improve. Try watching English movies online and listen on how they pronounce the words and try to follow it as well. Also try reading aloud, it's good if someone can help you out when you read so you will be corrected if you get to mispronounce words. And exercise your mouth and tongue so the muscle on it won't be harden when you speak any English words. We can never be perfect native English speakers but we can always learn how to speak the language 'almost' perfectly if we just practice. :)

As a Filipino citizen , we all know that English is not our first language but we need to learn how to speak English because it is the international standard mode of language all over the world. I am a teacher and I have to admit that sometimes my English is not that good or even if your a good speaker sometimes your tongue just slips and you already know that there is something wrong. I think the best way for you to learn is to read English books aloud and if your not sure how to pronounce it right , try to look in on the dictionary or online. Watching English movies helps too (just turn off the subtitle if it has one). It all boils down how determine and eager you want to learn. Don't give up and reach for your goals =)
