Do you get hungry and get up to eat in the middle of the night?

I used to get very very hungry at around one or two in the night and go to the refrigerator to snack. Is this a bad habit and does it put on weight? I have fruits most of the time but sometimes, cakes, pastries, chocolates and ice creams are what I crave for. None of my family members have this habit and they all tease me for it. Am I the only one or do I have company?

Yes, I have been known to do this and I did go through a stage of doing it regularly but realised I was putting weight on and still not sleeping properley. It's really not so good eating just before going to bed and is probably best to make sure you are not hungry before you settle for he night. Another interesting fact is that when we are thirsty our brain often interprets that feeling as being hungry and so we eat...try drinking a glass of water if it keeps happening and see if it stops the 'hunger' feeling.

Hey, thanks for that insight catalady. I will now try to control myself telling that it is only thirst and not hunger. Maybe I can have a fruit juice or something instead of a snack?

Hi there, Dev.:) When I'm already sleeping I don't feel any pang of hunger because I'm eating full meal during dinner. However, there were times when I stayed up late especially when I'm tinkering the keyboards and I feel hunger would sometimes strikes. I'd often help myself with bread and milk, or chocolates. I don't eat much though for it isn't good for my ulcer.:)

I hope I don't get any stomach ailments, because I already have other health issues to deal with. I too stay up late everyday. I guess my lifestyle is something which needs a drastic change.

You are lucky that you have a fixed time to sleep. I sometimes would have to clean up only after my daughter goes to sleep and that would be by around eleven thirty or twelve. It depends on how long she sleeps in the afternoons. And by the time I finish, it is one. And have to get up early again to cook for her and get her ready to school. Tough job this. Have a great day.

no, you're not alone in this late night snacking fiasco. . . you just have to be cautious of what it is you're snacking on or the pounds can pack on quickly. . . be sure its jsut vegetables or fruits something like celerey is great since it haas negative calories you burn more calories by eating it than you do gain from it itself. so just be smart about it.

Thanks ceekay. I was worried that having anything, for that matter, will put on weight. I just have fruits or fruit juices and nothing fried or weight gaining stuff. So I guess it is ok:-)

I do eat well during the day. It is night that gives me troubles. I have an early dinner. That might also explain why I feel hungry at nights. Thanks for the response.

Hi devijay78, You have company. I am one of those people who gets really hungry in the middle of the night. I know it is true hunger, because my stomach hurts and won't stop until I put some food in it. I have to be very care as to what I keep in the refrigerator, because I will definitely go for the "good tasting bad for you foods." In other words, I can't have chocolate cake or ice cream in the house. So, I just make sure I have fruits and yogurt, pickles, and other low-calorie foods that I can fill up on, in the middle of the night.

I do that too. But I never get cakes and ice creams at home. When I am trying to loose weight, I don't need those, right?

Hi Devijay, I am not used to getting up and eat in the middle of the night. once i drink milk or tea before going to bed, i only get up to pee if not i will be up only once the alarm clock rings on. just be careful maybe just take light snacks so that you will not go to bed so full.

I do every now and then because I work all through the night into the wee hours of the morning. I seriously need to stop this unbecoming habit. I am so inspired with Biggest Looser but darn I find it hard to eat broccolis and sprouts and all that stuff makes me gag.

I have never tried broccoli. The very sight is revolting. But I do eat sprouts and I have found something interesting. I don't feel hungry at all for a very long time after having them. They do make me feel very full. But I doubt whether they can be had at nights for dinner.

Does not having coffee at nights make you stay awake longer? I avoid having coffee and tea atleast six hours before I sleep. None of that after six in the evening. And good to know that I am not alone:-)

Sometimes i just get a food craving in the middle of the night. if it won't just go away, i usuallly have to give in to it and search the kitchen for what will satisfy me. I just can't get back to sleep if hunger is calling my name. I think every member of my household is guilty of late night snacking. I can usually tell what anyone had to eat by the dishes they leave behind.

Getting up in the middle of the night and eating is really bad habit. The human system is not designed to face such a contingency. I seriously doubt that there is health problem. After eating full stomach how can you be hungry in the middle of the neight.Urgently consult a doctor. It may be a case of diabetes
@devijay78 (1573)

I have been doing that for years. Even when I was young I used to sneak up to the refrigerator and search for my fav left overs. But I have not had diabetes. I go for routine checks. But it has been quite a while now since I visted the doc. I will get it checked. Thanks.

...i heard that having a midnight snacks can put more weight on your body...specially sweets and fatty foods...it's not a healthy habit....although, it's not totally wrong if your hungry tummy really wants to have some food,i even do it sometimes, but we should also be more conscious to our health..=)

I toatlly agree with you. I have been neglecting my health for years and now I have serious problems which I am trying to bring down. I have started dieting and exercising, so I should loose weight and feel much better in a matter of few months. Thanks.
