Frat- A more popular term for fraternity. A familiar word to almost everyone especially teenagers like students. What does this word really mean? What are its good and bad effects? And why are so many teens attracted to it? Fraternity- a word meaning BROTHERHOOD. This is the main reason why teenagers are attracted to frats. But most people do not see the true meaning of fraternity hidden under the shadows of this characteristics. Brotherhood? For all we know, brotherhood is a relationship in which, like in a true family, every brother is equal in rights; equal in responsibilities; equal in power; equal in everything. Unlike this, in a frat, there is discrimination from the Master down to the Neophyte. To join a frat, one must undergo a special initiation called HAZING. It is the barbaric process in which the frat members, the applicants, usually blindfolded. This is the most excruciating part of the entire process. Once the hazing starts, there is no backing out. The applicants have only two alternatives - remain standing until the end of hazing and pass or be knocked out or worse, die and fall. Some die while being initiated, either intentionally or accidentally. Being a frat member has its positive and negative aspects. One of its good aspects is how the members help each other especially in their financial needs. The only problems about this is how they collect contributions from unwilling subjects like students who usually have their own problems to deal with. The frat also has the duty to protect its members. But sometimes, this duty reaches the limits. The frat will slay its members even if they are the ones who are wrong. all the members abideto the policy, "All for one, one for all". This policy is the main source of frat wars. This happens when two or more disputing teens happen to be both frat members. This small quarrel will grow until the entire frats will be involved. The two frat will then fight against each other until only one of them left. In this gang fights, some frat members or innocent civilians maybe injured or be killed. To avoid all the bad effects caused by frats, it will be much help if we do our best not to join of frats without joining any. Having even just one true friend is far better than having fraternity so why don't you try to find one. Parents must also give enough love and affection to their children. And society must not be judgmental. Most of those who turn to frats only want to seek refuge from all of these stress. We must think twice before joining any fraternity. Because fraternity are like black HOLES in which one can get in but cannot get out. have some insights here my friend.

A fraternity for me is a brotherhood that should be respected, one professor of mine explained that fraternities are really solidarities set-up by people trying to achieve a common goal. He continues by saying that there have been many "fake" fraternities so to speak that take up the same name as highly established fraternities. This in turn, creates both confusion and dilemma. Confusion in terms of people thinking that the real fraternities are as brutal and violent as the fake ones. The dilemma now is this... that the real fraternities are in scope of the violent hazings and terrible acts by these pseudo-fraternities. Another dilemma that is presented is with the people who are interested in joining a fraternity. They are warded off from the real brotherhood because they are afraid that they might get beaten and that they may never see tomorrow's light of day. I agree with certain points you've explained but by not joining a fraternity, we are taking away pride and honor from the real fraternities and we are diminishing their tradition and prestige. The real solution is filtration and awareness. Be careful when choosing a fraternity, register with local figures who have also been part of these fraternities that are not really violent in nature. Your point was made, but I guess certain issues require certain actions from certain perspectives. :p I hope I've made a good opinion as well! :D

No problem. I guess it's just that I'm very opinionated and I don't usually let things go unnoticed :p Are you scared of your mother or are you scared of hurting her? Wait... so you quit the fraternity already?

the brotherhood of all men. fraternity is the most popular stuff in the world. its like having fun in the rain. its like playing with your friends in the beach. its like asking your brother to teach you the formula of gaining a= in math. its like a group of people that bind themselves and fullfill the best of it, having more than one head and thinking solutions to problem like brainstorming, and ideas comes out. its a good stuff. make sure you are one of the good group.

I went to college twice already and I encounter many people wants to recruit me to joined their fraternity but I refused to joined them because I don't need a group like fraternity. I believe that if you are a good person you can earned more friends more than the number of a fraternity. I have plenty of friends that willing to help me whatever I want, wherever it is! I knew many people from our school who are a member of the fraternity but when my friends gather together they will also joined us. It seems that I have a group in our school before.

I have never been in the Fraternity but i think the Fraternity before was way better. because it's not just the physical toughness of a member, but also the mental intelligence of it since they also debate issues and topics with other fraternitiy groups. and that's how a fight is supposed to be, not with physical but with their intelligence.

Fraternity is understanding, it is recognition, it is a joining with men in common enterprises, it is acceptance of others, it is a willingness to share and to participate, it is discipline. It is selflessness. It is these things and many moreā€”it is above all an attitude. Today, fraternities are giving every indication of continuing to fill a void that would otherwise exist on the campus. No organization in existence today meets the needs of the student as does a fraternity.
