In previous years,I've noticed Seasonal christmas cakes sitting on the "Reduced" shelf as their best before date was weeks before the holiday was due! What IS the point of that?!

I was out shopping again last night, and there's now an aisle of the Christmassy seasonal stuff available..I picked up a chocolate "Yule Log" cake for a look, and the best before date on it was October 15th! WHY would anyone buy one of these things a couple of months beforehand?

I find it interesting that some people believe the birth of Jesus was in Sept and slowly as years go by, people are starting to think about this season earlier and earlier every year....

So you think there's a possibility it could be a re-organisation of the Christian calendar led by the Retail trade? ...Interesting.....

Hey, I am saying anything, but the retail stores do have a certain control over us, don't you think? I mean what about subliminal messages? I seriously believe this one store we go to plays something and we end up spending way too much then we intended to. And what's funny is this store is an outlet store, everything is cheaper and yet we can't afford to shop there..lol

You're quite right about the psychology of shopping...They'll play upbeat music during busy periods to get you moving along faster,or peaceful stuff to get you to linger when it's quiet..placement of fresh fruits and veggies,a hot food section,a bakery section, fresh coffee on the go..The latest "Must Have" Items on prominent display..all smells and sights to draw you in...

Oh yes I agree with you here - it really gets on my nerves too and I think even more so this year as I feel like we've not really had a good summer what with all the rain, so now I have noticed this september - like today for example - my day off has been spent in the garden sunning myself because the weather has been good! So while the weather is good I don't want to be reminded of the fact that the cold weather is really due to be coming!!! lol

Actually, in my neck of the woods, it's not christmas decorations but Halloween and candy on sale - everywhere. I don't dislike Halloween - I like waiting for cute kids around (if I'm not too busy and would be ok with being bothered). In fact kids under 10 are ok. But kids in their teens -that's just annoying. Once Christmas is over, it's fall decor and Thanksgiving. After that, then it's Christmas decor. Oh I can't wait til' this year is over. I hope 2011 would be a better year for all of us!

Halloween wouldn't be as much of an event as Christmas is Here, though the store merchandising is going to be fairly intense nearer the time...

I just ignore the whole thing. We are not Christians and don't go for the whole Giftmess thing. We buy a couple of packs of charity cards and send those out. We spend extra on food and drink and have friends over and we decorate using holly and evergreens from the garden. I find crass commercialism in general is horrible - doesn't matter whether it is Christmas, Hallowe'en or the World Cup, we all have enough tat already!

I agree with you on the whole over commercialised aspect of the event..It's so much expense for one day out of the entire year..buying stuff you don't really need, with all the excess of food and drink along with it..
