Pet Food/treats Recalls

What is going on with all these recalls? Now Hartz has become the latest pet product company to join the list of companies recalling products due to possible salmonella contamination. Hartz Recalls 75,000 Dog Treat Bags In July United Pet Group recalled over 50 Pro-Pet and Excel branded products for dogs and cats, and in August Iams & Eukanuba recalled multiple brands of dry food and Merrick recalled dog treats - all due to possible salmonella contamination. Now, the Hartz Mountain Corporation is voluntarily recalling one lot of Hartz Naturals Real Beef Treats for Dogs due to concerns that one or more bags within the lot may have been potentially contaminated with Salmonella. The affected lot includes 74,700 8-oz bags of Hartz Naturals Real Beef Treats for Dogs, lot code BZ0969101E, UPC number 32700-11519, which were imported by Hartz from a Brazilian supplier. The product was then distributed to a number of stores across the United States. The Brazilian supplier, Bertin, did not detect salmonella in routine tests before shipment but a routine sample test conducted by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) did indicate the presence of salmonella. In response, Hartz has voluntarily recalled the entire lot, and say they are "aggressively investigating the problem" http://www.petpeoplesplace.com/resources/news/dogs/hartz-recalls-75-000-dog-treat-bags.htm After the bad scare we had with dog treats which were made in China and killed so many of our pets I started to make my own pet treats. I was going to stop this and start to buy them again....now I am so glad I didn't. What do you think of these latest recalls. So many of these recalls in people food as well as pet food could be avoided if these companies who send the products to foreign countries just to save a few dollars should be punished in some way. What do you think? Perhaps FDA could make them pay a huge fine?

I didn't hear of this one yet. With all of the recalls in our world these days, nothing seems to surprise me anymore. Makes you wonder what exactly we're supposed to buy when we can't trust anything or anyone. You have the right idea making your own dog treats.

I have also found it is quite a bit cheaper for me to make them myself. I freeze them so I can make a decent sized batch each time.

I am very thankful that I have not purchased anything from any of the companies that have issued a recall for pet food.

i think processed and packaged food should be CLOSELY inspected FIRST for all possible contamination, even BEFORE it reaches the public market. should we be let to pay for food that would make us or our animals sick? careless people concerned should be strictly fined, argh!
