Do you stay friends with your Ex's or do you break all ties?

Is it worth throwing away that built up trust?
I think my question makes a big assumption, doesn't it? Maybe the relationship broke up because of lack of trust, or because one person was damaging to the other or of questionable character. I think every relationship is different, and you have to assess the pros and cons of continuing it individually.

For me an ex is an ex for a reason. When we split we split all ties. It may work for some people, but it cannot for me.
I am no exception but I feel that if we could be really great friends after the break up then we broke up because??
