How would you define respect?

What does the word respect mean to you? For me it is the most important thing in the world besides health. The need to be respected by others. And by respect I mean that to be accepted as I am, and not being criticized about characteristics that I have and cannot change. What is your opinion about respect?

Treat others the way you want to be treated and you too will be treated the same way. This is what respect means to me.

Hi, Rap! I agree that respect is urgent, although I don't really care much what others think. I absolutely loved teaching high school seniors for 42 years, but we got a new principal who warned us that he has no respect for teachers, especially the older ones, and proceeded to prove it constantly. It was so horrible that I retired a few years earlier than planned. I'd rather be broke than be with such an atmosphere!

I think respect is doing unto others as you would have them do unto you without regard to their position in any area.

In my opinion, respect means showing compassion, decency and consideration of others. Also, refraining from judging another is an important part of respect. To be honest, I really don't understand why people complain about not getting any respect, (although Rodney Dangerfield did make a good living off of complaining about it). In my culture, respect is earned and rewarded to those who have shown good character. People observe each other and like it or not, good or bad messages are being sent out. In my opinion, unless a person is in an authoritative position, respect is not automatic; it is rewarded.

Don't do to others what you don't want others to do to you. That is my belief in respect as well as my principle.

when a person values anther's opinion and thoughts then treats that person with dignity, it shows how valuable that person is to the other. that is my answer.
