i am not sure how to explain it clearly, but let me try, i hope you guys will understand what i am trying to tell : the scenario would be about a pregnant women, in our country we have some beliefs that during pregnancy stage, a pregnant women will like or dislike something ( i don't know what's the English word for this or if there is really an English word equivalent to this symptoms ).. when a pregnant woman like something during pregnancy stage, old folks in our country believe that few characteristic of that "something", be it a thing or a person will be inherited by their baby.. For example, if a pregnant women likes an actor during pregnancy stage and she demand for a movie or a picture or everything that has something to do with that particular actor to her husband or to anyone in her family, the moment her baby is born, it will inherit some traits of that particular actor, could be physically or attitude wise... other example is, if a pregnant women crave for a certain food/drink, just take for example, milks..we all know milks are white..they said that the moment her baby is born, it will be a white baby due to her craving for milk... do you guys believe in this? or perhaps, have you read or heard about this belief? some old folks in our country said this is proven and they are saying this based from their own experiences..my fellow mylotter, i wanna know, im really wondering about this..please share your thoughts/comments with regards to this..happy mylotting to everyone!

Hi, Good day! I've heard about this from some old folks I knew. However, I don't believe in this. I gave birth to two healthy baby boys. During my pregnancy stages I never craved for anything. My friends told me that I'm weird. I've been pregnant twice and never experienced anything unusual physically and emotionally. There were no changes in my likes and dislikes. It was as if I was not pregnant at all.

i can relate to this coz i'm also a filipino. Old folks has so many superstitious belief especially when you are living in some provinces. That is pretty funny, there are no scientific basis on that. But what we could do, this has been part of our culture though..

Yes. I haven't found any equivalent word in English either, but in Indonesia this condition is called "Ngidam." It means, if a pregnant woman likes or dislikes something she will demand it to be done. I am not quite sure about what those old folks spoke. Based on their experience? How many of those? I think it needs deep survey. So, if my wife for example, like Super Mario Bros and she wants her baby to be exactly like Mario, then it will happen? The only indication I can point is, perhaps if the pregnant woman keeps thinking of what she likes or dislikes, then the chemistry inside her body will work things out, and it will influence the baby's growth. That's my opinion. We clearly need an expert here.

You are welcome, my friend. Believe it or not, the most important thing is we (and the pregnant women) must do the best. Be positive both in thinking and acting. So, thank you for replying!

Let me think!!! Ice cream and ketchup??? No! No! Pickles and cream cheeze??? No! No! Sardines and chocolate????? No! No! This old wive's tale can't be true. There would be some mighty strange kids being born from what I've seen if it were true.

bless! you described what you mean very well, the word in english is a craving for something! my mum ate nothing but peanuts when she was carrying me, and i can't stand them now! i didnt have cravings when i was pregnant but noticed i could smell manufactured aromas such as air fresheners from an incredible distance! so long as you are healthy, the baby will be born fine with no problems. there are always coincidences as children grow up, and for the most part that is all they are - coincidences! everyone is different! :)

hi wendie2781, wew..im really trying my best to explain what i mean so that everyone will understand it..haha..i was thinking it is more on "Craving", although when we say "craving" it is more applicable on things or foods and this situation is not only limit to foods and things but also people..you've got a point with regards to coincidences too..thanks for your sharing!..

These are legends of course. In my country there are many superstitions mainly about cravings for food. But there are also things like this: when a wooman is pregnant she must not colour her hair because the hair of the baby will be of the same colour. Today nobody believes in this :))

are you a filipino? those superstitious beliefs has been handed from genearation to generation. at this day and age it has been proven that these superstitions about "paglilihi" is not true. the genes is what makes the whole personality and characteristic of a person. As for the "paglilihi", it is the craving of a pregnant woman whether for food or other else. smetimes, if the woman would be asking for a particular food, it just means she wants to take in something to prevent from feeling sick, coz you know, it is really hard to be in the first trimester of pregnancy. as for the wantig to have particular objects or person, well, i think that is something like "pa-cute".

hi jenny1015, yep, im a filipino...other people said it is not true although few claimed that it is, although if we based it to genetics we can say that it is not true, but if we base it to psychology or rather how human mind works, there is a possibility since we know how strong a human mind is..but thank you for responding and for your idea about it..it is much appreciated..haha, i like the "pa-cute" part though..=)
