Have you tried eating Korean Food?

I was not a fan of spicy food, but later on I found myself enjoying Korean food which is mostly spicy. I love samgyeupsal (grilled strips of lean pork), kalbi jjim (grilled marinated beef), toppokki (spicy rice cakes) and a lot more. How about you? Have you tried Korean food? If so, what's your favorite? If you haven't tried yet, would you be interested to try Korean cuisine?

I have tried Korean food and I think it really depends on how one cooks it for a person to appreciate it or not. I have tried a number of Korean dishes but, its either I don't know the name or maybe I just don't know which name goes with the Korean dishes that I get to eat. One time, I got to eat their "Kimchi" when I went to an English Camp and it was spicy. I happen to like spicy food and I enjoyed it. Then, when I got back to Home School to teach some Korean students, the "Kimchi" that I got to try there was most of the time spicy than usual. Finally, another time came by with me and some of my colleagues visiting a previous student of ours. They served lunch and of course, there was Kimchi again but, this one was better than the first two that I got to taste. It got me thinking. To answer what my favourite would be, well, I mentioned it already a few times, don't know if I spelled it right but, its "Kimchi" I also like their Shin Ramyeon but, the ones that I get to taste are often from a pack if not in a cup. I really want to try one like the ones they serve in a restaurant. (^_^ )

Yeah, I also think the taste of Kimchi varies depending on who prepared it. Usually, Korean moms make their own Kimchi for their consumption at home. If you would notice, Kimchi also vary in color, some are reddish, other variety is pinkish, or orange in color. Actually, I'm not a fan of kimchi but I can eat it if it's mixed with fried rice - kimchi bokkumbap. I also like ramyeon, and just like you, I only get to taste the packed one which can be bought in the grocery stores. I prefer Jin Ramyeon coz it's not too spicy.

Yeah, I heard that thing you mentioned about moms preparing a lot of Kimchi for their family's consumption from a student of mine on the phone. I agree, it can be served differently and there was this time when me and my colleagues were all eating and then somebody noticed that I didn't get a bowl of kimchi. It was too reddish so I assumed that it was too spicy. They tried to taste the ones that they had and they all agreed (^_^") The last one that I mentioned that tasted really well wasn't too reddish. I couldn't help but compare the one that we ate at work and the one that our previous student served to us. Kimchi really seems more of a snack to me actually. (^_^") I think I also heard Jin Ramyeon but, I guess I will only get to taste it if I really eat at a Korean restaurant here in the country.. hopefully, not too expensive..

Yeah, I've seen my student's mom prepare kimchi before... You can buy Jin Ramyeon from big supermakerkets and Korean stores... it's in a yellow pack and costs P36-40 (1000 won/less than one dollar). It's nice to go to a Korean restaurant with a group of friends so you don't have to pay much. Just order two to three servings of their main dishes like samgyeupsal, and I think you'll get a dozen of side dishes without paying extra.. :)

too late for my reply, anyways, working in a korean boss is soooo stressful cause if they ask you something they want to have feedback right away. That fast how they want they're staff to work for them but its impossible for us since we are a travel agent and we always rely to our supplier and so we cant give them they're expected answer right away :(

Hi ellechoi, If you have Korean friends and they'd cook Korean food for you just ask them to make it a little less spicy so you can enjoy the food. Kimbob, bulgogi and even kimchi can be prepared without having to put too much red pepper paste or other spicy ingredients.. ^_^ When I lived with my Korean students before they had to prepare my food in a way I could enjoy without losing its authentic Korean taste. hehe. But, of course, I learned to love and tolerate spicy food after a while. ^_^

You can try tteokbokki... it's made of rice cake but it's spicy, it's one of the famous Korean street snacks.. You can also try vegetable pancake, they also call it "Korean pizza". Most of their side dishes are vegetables and are really healthy such as spinach salad and bean sprout salad with sesame seeds, they also have pickled raddish, pickled cucumber and of course the more common kimchi variety - pickled lettuce. ^_^

I have tried. I like the Kimchi Fried Rice I had from a restaurant, I forgot the name. I would like to try more Korean food, especially the meat wrapped in lettuce leaves as I always see this on TV and it looks scrumptious! I also regularly buy Kimchi in a bottle in the supermarket. Korean ramen is also yummy. Sometimes it's too spicy though so I just put about half of the chili powder in the soup.

I love korean food! I don't take beef but I like the spicy cake, the bibimpap(mixed spicy rice), kimchi---my favourite side dish and many more. I think I'm beginning to be more and more inclined towards Korean food and culture. Probably it's because of my habit of watching korean shows all the time as they are just too good to be TV shows!

It's nice to know that you are willing to give new dishes from different cultures a try. It really is a new learning experience and I like to give different dishes from different cultures a taste. I would like to enjoy the flavors of the foods. There have been some dishes I thought I would hate but later I enjoy a lot. But no I haven't tried any Korean food yet but would be willing to give it a try in the future when I can.

I had kimchi... Didn't like it. What got my attention is the live octopus. Its a Korean delicacy. I'm afraid to eat it though, it moves on your plate and in your mouth.
