What are your difficulties when learning English?

Hi everyone! My native language is Vietnamese.English and Vietnamese have many differences. Many Vietnamese people find English hard to learn. We have a lot of problems with learning English such as pronunciation, use of tenses etc. For example: In Vietnamese it has no tense. In English: Yesterday, I visited my uncle. In Vietnamese: Hôm qua, tôi di tham bác c?a tôi. In English: I visit my uncle In Vietnamese: Tôi di tham bác c?a tôi. There is no difference between two sentences in Vietnamese except adverb of time. We can use the simple present tense to express all of tenses. Every word in Vietnamese has only one syllable so it has no stress. What about you?

For me being a fluent in English, is not a matter. Most important is that I understand and do some writing in a basic. Because as I notice even those lawyers, legislature and even those people which language are English, did not deliver it the best way...only those people called linguistic and mastering the English, language being fluent and the number is not greater than those know only the basic... Have a nice day!

yup, writing composition... Writers sometimes confused the readers by mixing the different verb tenses. We should be consistent on what tense to use, if present all should be in present tense, if past all should be in past tense. Readers will have hard time comprehending, and they might not believe in that passage. Same in our lives, we should be consistent in words and deeds, if I say I'm a good person and act unpleasantly toward others then i'm breaking the law of consistency and no body will believe in me. Yup, In order for us to learn is to read more. ^^ Have a great day!

Hi dear, I hope you must have improved your learning in English. In the earlier conversation, I have mentioned few short cut methods to improve learning. Here it is sure that you are trying your best effort to learn. As I told you earlier, find another friend and start talking and while learning, make sure that one more person is around you and start learning together. If so, you can discuss and speak each other also. Even mine also is not my native language. Mine is called Malayalam and the sentence structure is totally different than English & Malayalam. As you said, in English: Yesterday, I visited my uncle, in Malayalam: Innale jhan ente ammavane sandarshichu. So, even I am writing, I think in Malayalam (my mother tongue) first and translated at the same time in English. Only difference is that, we learned English from the age of 6-7 onward from the school. Still, mine is not good English. Many years before, when I went for an interview, the interviewer given me 12/100 in English speaking. I gradually improve and I think if the same person I meet again, he may give max 20-22/100 marks for my English. So try hard, from internet itself you can get so many simple methods to improve the language. If not, I will try to get some links suitable for you to learn English, later on. Regards, Thank-s

Hi dear, It always feels nice for me to do good to others. Your 'best remark' itself is an example. If you got a will, I am sure that you can easily learn English. In fact, I got a small book of the same having 40-45 pages, and it is good for learners. I got it from a train travel and I purchased it. If you give me your personal id, like yahoo, hotmail, or any, I can scan the pages and mail you as a pdf file to you. If required, you can read and make use of if. If desired, you can send me your mail id through my private message, and I will send the pdf pages to you. However, it is upto your interest. Thanks for your comments and responses. Regards, Thank-s

It is easy to remember what we're interested . And It's very hard to remember what makes us bored. I still remember your suggestion in the earlier discussion. Learning English with the other person is a good way. Thank for your interest for me.

Somehow English and Danish are alike - a benefit for learning the foreign language, but when im learning Dutch there is a difference in what they call the adverbs persons tense. Explanation; SINGULAR I have You have He/She/It has PLURALIS We have You have They have But in Dutch they are all different depending on the person, so now when im learning Dutch I make so many gramatical mistakes because Danish and English there are hardly any difference depending on the persons tense.

I get your point.Chinese and ENglish have many differences too.and due to few Chinese people speaking English, poor listenning and speaking English is a commom problem for many Chinese students.English has more passive voice and variation of pronoun whilt Chinese emphasizes on ative voice. And another main difference:For example in English there are three "be" verbs such as am,is,are but in Chinese(I can't type Chinese charaters in this website) we use one word. And there is also no variation of adverb of time and stess in Chinese.

I also like learning Chinese. But I am afraid of writing Chinese. It seems very hard. Vietnamese and Chinese have many similarities. Many words in Vietnamese borrow from Chinese. I see on Chinese films: some words in Chinese are the same pronunciation as Vietnamese.

I was worrying that you had any bias against Chinese people.Yes CHinese is also a bit difficult but since you have interest in it and your language bases.maybe through chat media we could communicate with and benifit from each other,it would be fun and significant. So could I have your email address for adding in skype or msn?And it doesn't matter much if you don't have one or want to.Have a nice day!

It was a good thing that in the Philippines, English is taught even in kindergarten. I speak and understand English but in a basic level that I may be able to communicate with English speaker well. It is also a good thing that the sentence structure of Filipino and English are almost the same which made it easy for us to learn the language.

The difficulty for me is the English slangs. Since basically we didn't learn the slangs, we learn formal English much more. So when I watch the movies, sometimes I find difficulties to understand it. I love China

Many say that English is really difficult to learn and I have to agree, but only if you do not use it often that is. The more you use the better it perfects. I am most proud of many that try, it is those that live in US for a great deal of time and do not even try is where I have a problem. I am Hispanic and know of many non-speaking English people who feel ashamed of trying. There should be absolutely no shame in a person who has difficulties as trying shows the person is most wanting to speak up, which in my opinion is great. I feel anyone who frowns down on a person who is trying to speak the language should be the person with shame. As people are criticized for living in the US and not speaking the language so why frown when they are trying. So I would suggest that you continue to utilize the language as this will make you better along the way. Good luck and can I say I believe you are doing wonderfully well.

I had many difficulties learning English, because my high school teacher from first year to 3rd year sucks. I have some difficulties in using the right tense with my sentences. Sometimes I also mispronounce the word, specially words that I only read once and haven't heard the right pronunciation, diction is sometimes a problem to me. But with practice everyday, or reading 10 English word in a dictionary everyday can help you learn English faster.

Hi BichDiep, my native language is Lithuanian and I find English difficult as well. However, I can share with you some useful tips that help me to improve my language skills. First of all, watching English movies, sitcoms especially with your native language subtitles help a lot. Secondly, reading English books, blog entries, newpapers and magazines make a great contribution to your language skills. Thirdly, talking with people in English as often as possible improves your speaking skills. Last but not least, I have noticed that thinking in English helps to activate my English vocabulary and to come up more often with rich phrases and verbal expressions that make my language more vivid. I hope you find this valuable. Best wishes, Kristina
