Damascus swords are some of the most beautifu swords but certainly are not the sharpest! They are made from Damascus steel (named after the city where the steel was created), which is quite strong, resilient, and can hold an edge very well since it has a lot of layers and less impurity due to the folding-of-the-layers process. However, the sharpness of the sword does not depend on the steel but the sharpening process and its function.

That was very interesting. About when did they start making this Sword of Damascus, and do they still make it? How is sharpness tested?

It's not really one sword but rather a technique for making steel, named after Damascus where it originated. Modern Damascus steels have been made by plating strips of steel and hammering them flat when hot. This gives the strength and hardness and also imparts the characteristic patterning. all the best urban

hi advokatku oh yes its the swords of damascus. they had that special sharpness that nobody has been able to duplicate in modern times. Called Damascus as that's where they were made.Strong and flexible and just outdoing anything before or since.

that is an impresive comment. i knew that the sharpests katanas where tried by cutting a pile of corpes, and he finests are able to cut up to 5 bodies in one blow. I also thought that the damascus sword was a small sword a bit bigger than a dagger. thanks for the tip

Wow, i did not know this. And i am amazed that they still cannot make a sword that sharp with modern techinques. DO you have a link or something about this sword? I guess it is in a museum somewhere, would be ace if i could go and see it for myself! But what i dont get is... surely it needs sharpening? All swords need to be sharpened? SO how come it wont eventually become blunt? Even if they sharpen it, you said that they cant make a sharper sword using technology? So it wold jsut be sharp as far as the technology allows right?

Wow, I just heard about this and was amazed to people who have made the sword. Sometimes the current technology is sometimes not able to make something that has been made by ancient technology. And it is old technology sometimes does not make sense if it is done for now.
