A lot of Pinoy Shows are TV Series Copycats!

I am so disappointed with the TV shows shown in the Philippine TV right now because it really seems like we don't have any originality at all. One glaring example is 1dol which is a screaming Glee copycat. How about the new show, Imortal starring Angel Locsin and John Lloyd Cruz which somehow mimics The Vampire Diaries. This kind of copycat shows had already been on TV before like Tabing Ilog which is very similar to Dawson's Creek. I actually think the only original show in the current ABSCBN Lineup is Magkaribal. How i wish the network could come up with more original shows so we can really showcase Filipino Talent.

lol. I admire GMA also for coming up with original shows. I just hope they would add more star power to them. Unfortunately, the truth is Kapamilya stars are so much popular than Kapuso Stars. Just look at endorsements, and the Kapamilya Stars are almost everywhere.

lol. I am just saying that most Kapamilya stars are more known than Kapuso stars. Ask anyone on the street and I bet they would know more about Piolo Pascual rather than Dingdong Dantes or Richard Gutierrez. That is my point actually. As far as commercials go, it still matters because the Philippines is a third world country and not everyone can afford cable TV thus the ratings war matter to TV Stations. It is true that we don't need it but as a whole, a lot of people still watch commercials.

Grazilda is okay, Glaiza de castro is a good actress. Illumina, I wished they put better lead there.. rhian and aljur are a pain to see together because both actors need a lot and I mean a lot of acting workshops. Bantatay I still have to see that yet.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not a fan of soap operas. So I'm really not doing this just to defend them. Anyway, yeah maybe they imitated the theme and concept, but that doesn't necessarily make them a copycat. They don't copy the exact lines or translate or even do adaptations of the shows you claimed they copied right? They just use the theme and concept that is currently hot to viewers. Furthermore, showcase Filipino talent in what field? Acting or conceptualization? I think it's more on conceptualization (obviously since Angel Locsin was nominated in the Emmy). They have to invent ideas that's really original. But then again, according to my professor in UP, there's really no original idea since a lot of ideas now are based on former ones. They're just kind of being recycled. Also, you could think of Magkaribal as based on other hit fashion movies and series like the Devil Wears Prada. Not the same story obviously, but same concept and same theme. So it's really not that original, but then again, what is? For the record, if the network is getting top ratings for their shows that are copycats, then they're having a good job imitating and using what's hot right? Especially since a lot of Filipinos are avid fans of american shows. I admire the network actually since they can get the people to watch their 'copied' shows.

You have a point there. I just think that the timing of it all makes their shows look even more like they are mimicry. Just because Glee and vampires are all the rage now, here are shows that have the same concept. With regards to Magkaribal, I think it is original because it came out, not because fashion series are popular now but it came out with a story already in hand just set in the fashion industry. Thanks for responding! Happy Mylotting!

I actually admire the network for their previous shows like Dahil May Isang Ikaw, Pangako Sa Yo and Mara Clara so it means the network can produce a storyline not because of a trend but because they wanted to start a trend of its own. I would not call that patronizing foreign Shows because there are Filipino Shows worthy of being called innovative and creative. I just would like to point out that I really believe our Filipino writers can do better than that because in the past they already did write stories that have stood the test of time.

Just the same, good timing or not, Magkaribal also used the same concept. I don't think it's mimicry just because the station wanted to 'strike while the iron's hot'. I think the reason why people think that shows here 'mimic' the shows in the states is because those they (people) patronize Hollywood produced shows and they think they already have high standards because of what they watch, and they think that it's cheap that shows in their own country use the same concept used abroad. If people aren't watching any shows from the US, do you think they would think that the shows here are just 'mimics' of the shows in the states? No because they're patronizing their own right?

I only watch 1DOL because of Sarah. I just love to hear and see her sing and act. I only watch Imortal because I love to see Angel Locsin act. But if the only criteria was originality and uniqueness, Oh dear, they surely all flunk. How come we don't seem to have our OWN idea? I have seen a lot of foreign TV series and it seems like they always come up of something different each time. I don't think Pinoys are that dumb not to think of anything unique and different. My speculation is that, these shows cater the masses. And let's face it, it takes time before unique and different shows strike and be appreciated by the common people. I'm not demeaning our fellow Filipinos but let's base it on Statistics. No wonder why Indie films almost always remain an indie film. Only a few sets of people appreciate them enough to make it a big-time movie. Where there are a lot of audiences, that's where the sponsors are, and where money comes in. It's still business.

In fairness to some movies, some are really good. Mostly from those made by Star Cinema. But sometimes we are only good when it comes to rom-coms and rom-dramas. Sometimes horror. What happened to suspense, or action? I have never seen anything decent in my entire lifetime.

Sad but true, sometimes money stifles creativity. A lot of our indie films are really good but none makes it to the mainstream because it does not cater to the masses. Instead we get these young love teams to make a movie with cliche dialogue about another love story.

I agree with you, they got the idea and they make it pinoy taste but still its looks very much of mimicry from foreign shows. I wish they could make something more original and unique and less of so much cheesy drama.

Thanks. I actually wish that to as well. I guess our shows just want to be updated with trends because they think it will make the show more popular but it amazes me that thay don't notice that a lot of their audiences are seeing all the copying and mimicry.

Lol. TV5's Face2Face is very much like the show Maury and Jerry Springer. Even reality shows are being copied. I can't believe it! GMA7's Captain Barbel storyline is very much like Smallville's story line. I wouldn't be surprise if there is a similar Gossip Girl or Hellcats in the works. haha.

Yes. I also remember the time when Shaider and Bioman is in primetime. lol. I miss those times so that I wont get disappointed with the shows that they are coming up with today. Ghost Fighter and Slam Dunk were really the talk of the town back then.

This only proves that our tv series writers had ran out of ideas and originality because everything are based on korean novelas, pocketbooks, mexican tv, series, etc. I am also disappointed with such because you can predict the ending. Worse, they put some twist which is no longer connected to the previous scenes. It is as if they are fooling the viewers.

I know but still I know deep inside that Filipino TV Series writers are talented, it is just that I guess their creativity and originality are being stifled by the fact that the networks wanted the shows to amp up their ratings regardless if it is good or not.

well im dissapointed because for every 10 tv series only 1 can be considered unique. and the dialoques are really so cliche.

Cliche is the right word to describe the current primetime lineup of Philippine TV. Nothing out of the box and so ordinary! I know we can do better because Filipino talents are one of the best in the world. I sincerely do believe that so this whole thing is really disappointing even if it is just TV I am talking about.

Hello Lea, It's been like that since the creation of Captain Barbell or Darna scenes. but the first Darna by Angel Locsin was a bit original since it's from outer space. as for Captain Barbell, most of the Story lines were based on Superman or Small Ville, but i liked the costume that made me do this. Not a referral LINK. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-6URq1uNas well, that's the trend now. due to low budgeting, Our SHowbiz in the Philippines can't make Sci-fi movies but focus more on drama crying telenovela's.

It is truly disappointing. However, I don't mind drama crying telenovelas just as long as they are original creative and out of the box. The whole Captain Barbell is truly laughable because they did not even try to tweak their storyline to make it look like they did not rip off Smallville. lol.

How I wish I do have the talent to make one! lol. I just believe though that our Pinoy writers can do better than that. Copying something just because it is popular at the moment isn't exactly the best thing for the industry. It just frustrates me that we are settling for these shows when I know that they can do better.

I love Magkatribal too even if a lot of people in this discussion say that it is just a tale of two sisters who haven' t found each other. I just admire the plot twists around it and I love how Gretchen Baretto acts. Her character is like a crazy person! lol.

I saw Idol and the only similarity with glee is that they also sing in that show. Story wise, setting, production way different. I wish they were like glee though, Idol is not even good enough. I've been following Immortal actually its not the vampire diary its loosely based on twilight and underworld and a bit of Interview with the vampire. It actually worked for me I like the show. Personally all TV series are based in an old TV series or movies. They just put a little twist into it to make it look original but truth is its all based in some show one way or the other. Magkaribal is just a different setting but its just sbout two sister who lost each other and in the end will find each other sounds all too familiar to me. I know I'm a TV junkie.

lol. You have a point. I just hate the fact that just because Glee and The Vampire Diaries are popular now, it is at the same time they decided to bring 1dol and Imortal in the picture. Anyway, I haven't thought that way about Magkaribal, I guess I am not right about that one. lol.

You're right about the copying. I've noticed the same thing and have had a goold laugh with my sister about the other night. However, I think that the reason the network is trying to do spinoff of these series is because it is more expensive to syndicate the original version to be shown to the general viewing public. I could be wrong though.

i don't watch much of those TV shows but i do hear a lot about them.i don't give much attention because all in all with few exception most of the prime time shows focuses not on pure talent but on appearances and that's true with music and movie industry also.just pair hot young couple with a copy cat storyline, presto! have your self a movie..have a out of tune actress lip sing some lines then you'll have an album.. sometimes copying will be OK but with upgraded versions..instead its a degraded version.well!who cares?its all about the money for them. where is the ART?

lol. I find it funny too that most of our movies are song titles and of course those movies will star the current love team that they are trying to build up. I agree with you that copying is OK in some versions like in the show, Rubi (Philippine Version). It may have copied the Mexican telenovela but it tweaked the storyline into something more.

It is most likely like piracy too you are getting ideas of others and turning them as if it is your own original version isn't it?

It is not exactly piracy. It is just that the similarities are so obvious. There are still big differences though which is why it is not Piracy because piracy is copying the exact same thing. Anyway, Thanks for responding.
