Grade transfer

United States

My son was transferred from one Pre-Algebra class to another one with a different teacher. With his original teacher he was getting an A. Now he has only been in this new class for a week. Today the new teacher posted the grades on a screen infront of the class and it shows the grades of the kids, the three new kids, one of them is mine shows a grade of F. I am not happy camper. Shouldn't the grade from the previous class transfer over and average in. Anyways there is only 3 weeks left until the end of the 1st quarter. Thanks for all your answers

I think there is a significant issue in change of grade. Please give more details.Did the change of teacher occur in the same school and why?

theoretically yes, the grades should average into the new class. I noticed however that you live in the US. When I went to middle school in California I had a similar situation (i was in 7th grade). It was in science class, I had an A, I was transferred to another teacher and my grade dropped to a C. I later found out that I was placed in an advanced class. Fortunately I figured it out right away, studied more and raised my grade back to an A. I suppose your son is in a similar situation. The school must have noticed he was particularily advantaged in his course and transfered him to a more advanced pre-algebra course. If this is the case then NO your previous grades would not be taken into account, he would start from scratch. This is obviously to make it fair for the other students who already were in advanced placement. One thing I find odd though is that the teacher shows the grades to everyone on the board. Theoretically it is a violation of privacy, at least in the EU where I currently live. The grades should not be posted next to your name but a number that identifies you (like a school id, or something like that). I would check into that because it is the kind of thing that can create a few problems (teasing/bullying/etc)
